The University’s Mathematics program is designed to prepare the student for graduate work in applied mathematics and allied areas, careers in industry (actuarial and quantitative areas of biological and social sciences) and government employment. Depending on their professional aspirations and career plans, students can choose either a B.S. or B.A. degree. Both degree programs in Mathematics require Computer Science 101 and 102. Students may take additional mathematics electives; those who intend to go to graduate school are advised to obtain competence in a foreign language and to elect one or more 400-level mathematics 
courses. By completing the B.S. or B.S. in Mathematics students will: have learned fundamental knowledge of Mathematics and be prepared to pursue graduate study or to work as professional mathematicians; have well-developed quantitative and analytical skills; be able to use skills in mathematical reasoning and critical thinking to understand and analyze phenomena of nature, modern science and society; be able to make inferences from data and to communicate, prove and justify their findings; be prepared for various qualifying examinations such as the GRE and PRAXIS II.
