Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics (jointly administered with Mathematics department), is an interdisciplinary program providing a foundation in physical sciences with a strong emphasis on the mathematical techniques needed for analysis and modeling. It prepares the student for science or analysis careers which use these math tools along with problem-solving skills. Program Goals After completing this program, students should understand: fundamental principles of mathematics and their ability to apply these principles in the solution of problems in calculus, algebra and specialized topics fundamental principles of physics and their ability to apply these principles to problems in classical mechanics, electromagnetism, optics and wave phenomena, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, atomic physics, special relativety and specialized topics laboratory skills for the analysis of physical systems, including data and error analysis, electronics, instrumentation, radiation detection, counting statistics, interaction of charged particles with matter, lasers and optical interferometers, dimensional analysis, fundamental applications of probability and statistics. the ability to process and evaluate effectively both theoretical and real-life quantitative data. communication using oral, written, or electronic media, and have the teamwork and leadership skills needed to recognize, isolate, and solve mathematical problems. commitment to continuous learning, new ideas, and be able to bring them to bear to help others. Careers: The program is excellent preparation for graduate school in mathematics, applied mathematics, physics, mathematical physics or other similar programs and for many positions in industry, financial analysis of technology industries, research laboratories and teaching.
