Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences (MSc. MLS) program at the College of Health & Medical Technology Sulaimani Polytechnic University offers the opportunity for Medical Laboratory graduates to elevate their level of clinical practice, advance their career, and become leaders in the Medical Laboratory profession as Medical Laboratory Scientists.
This MSc program was carried out according to the Bologna Process using the European credit accumulation system (ECTS).
Study Plan
First year (60 ECTSs)
First-semester courses are composed of four modules for all the students and one elective module.
Similarly, the second-semester courses include four modules for all the students and one elective module.
Modules
The program in the first year is integrated to provide all the medical laboratory science elements that a medical laboratory scientist practitioner requires as follows:
· Biostatistics
· Economic production
· Research Methodology
· Molecular Parasitology
· Human physiology
· Pharmacology
· Bioinformatics
· Hematology
· Advanced Virology
· Advanced Biochemistry
· Advanced Bacteriology and Mycology
· Advanced Clinical Immunology
· Advanced Molecular Biology
· Advanced Histopathology
· Advanced Parasitology
· Clinical biochemistry and laboratory management.
Biostatistics and research methodology courses will allow the students to design the research protocols for testing their hypothesis through an investigatory and analytical approach. The didactic courses of all training elements will be concentrated in the first year of the program to optimize the use of faculty time and help the students lay strong theoretical foundations of medical laboratory science.
Second year 60 (ECTSs)
Third and Fourth semesters
The program's second year will be devoted to research work in any subspecialty. This includes writing a proposal, conducting laboratories and/or clinical works related to the proposal, and writing the thesis. Students will carry out the work independently under the guidance and supervision of a dedicated supervisor. Later, the thesis will be evaluated by an examining committee as VIVA.

The MSc. program is delivered over 2 years (120 ECTSs).
Teaching
You will learn through lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical classes.
Assessment
You will be assessed through written assignments, exams, practical laboratory work and objective structured practical examinations (OSPEs).
Publication
All students have to publish a paper from their thesis before the VIVA.
Entry Requirements
Graduates from the biology and medical laboratories departments with minimum Bachler’s degree of 60 can apply for this course.
English Language Requirement
IELTS (5), TOEFL IBT (59) and PTE (52).

The missions of Sulaimani Polytechnic University https://spu.edu.iq/ are primarily fulfilled through the academic departments. SPU offers 18 undergraduate programs by 5 colleges and 18 departments. All undergraduate programs at SPU follow the Bologna Process using the European credit accumulation system (ECTS). The Bachelor's program is divided into 8 semesters within 4 years.
To achieve a Bachelor's degree, students must collect 240 ECTSs (30 ECTSs per semester).
The first semester across all academic departments is considered a Foundation Program, which is designed to enhance the student's academic English skills, computer skills, critical thinking skills, and study habits. The later semesters are designed according to the student's majors, which aligns with the Bologna Process using an up-to-date program for the polytechnic universities. Further, the final semester includes research and project subjects, allowing the students to obtain basic research skills and project development and management expertise.

Master program general info
Sulaimani Polytechnic University https://www.spu.edu.iq offers postgraduate programs of Higher Diploma (1 year), Master's (2 years), and PhD (3 years) by nine academic departments. Similarly, all postgraduate programs at SPU follow the Bologna Process using the European credit accumulation system (ECTS). The Higher Diploma degree consists of 2 academic semesters, and a total of 60 ECTSs need to be collected, whereas, for Master's and Ph.D. degrees, 120 and 180 ECTSs need to be collected. The first-year academic postgraduate programs for both Master's and PhD include two university foundation modules: Research Methodology and Biostatistics. The other modules are related to their academic departments and modules necessary according to the research proposal. The maximum number of modules per semester is six modules. The second (in both Master's and PhD) and third (in PhD) academic years are dedicated to research proposal writing, data collection, student progress, and thesis writing.
