The maritime transportation industry faces many profound challenges including maintaining a positive impact on the ever-transforming global economy, protecting the marine environment, and addressing safety and security concerns imposed by terrorism, piracy, and other criminal activities. Maritime transport is the foundation of world trade and globalization. Developments in maritime systems have a direct societal and environmental impact. At Stevens, the Maritime Systems Master's Program has been organized to provide students with a comprehensive graduate education in the areas of maritime industry, engineering, and management activities to stimulate and enhance their capacity for success in the industry. On the Hudson river waterfront, Stevens campus provides a premiere location for studying maritime commerce and transport. With a core curriculum that focuses on the principles of oceanography, maritime environmental issues, and the global economy, master's students have the option of pursuing one of six areas of concentration. Students from diverse backgrounds — engineering, ocean sciences, environmental science, business and management — are encouraged to apply. With guidance from the Program Director, and a program advisor, each graduate student will create a customized Study Plan based on their own experience and interests. Maritime Environment Track: This concentration offers the opportunity to pursue advanced study of the environmental issues and sustainability challenges facing the marine transportation industry and associated business and urban communities. Students acquire the skills to address complex engineering problems associated with pollution prevention, waste management, and environmental compatibility in design, construction, maintenance and operations.
