The Masters by research degree provides an opportunity to deepen your knowledge and understanding of a topic relating to one of the Law School's areas of research expertise, such as law in context, international and comparative law, and public law.

As a Masters by research candidate, you develop advanced skills in the conduct of independent and sustained research as you undertake a research project under academic supervision that culminates in a thesis of 25,000-50,000 words.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9 – Masters Degree by Research.

Academic entry requirement

Prerequisites
The minimum academic requirement for entry to a Master of Laws (Research) at La Trobe University is four-year Bachelor's degree with an Honours year in a relevant discipline completed within the last 10 years with at least a weighted average mark of 70 (H2A) in the Honours year or above.

Where an applicant does not meet the normal academic entry requirements, an application may be made for admission on equity or alternative entry grounds where the applicant can demonstrate, through discipline-appropriate forms of evidence:

  1. That they have attained the prior research and/or learning outcomes that normally pertain to the minimum academic entry requirements for the degree, and
  2. That they have the capacity to successfully undertake a higher degree by research.
