The music theater program is designed to prepare the vocal music student to be competitive in the field of popular Broadway musical theater performance. The courses are built on the standard music core classes with selected performance-related classes from both the School of Music and the School of Theatre and Dance. This highly selective program is focused on the creation of skilled artists with strengths in the three demand areas of singing/musicianship, acting for the stage and movement/dance. Upon graduation, students are prepared to audition for entry-level positions in the musical theater and entertainment industry. The objectives of Bachelor of Music (B.M.) program are to attain a general level of functional musicianship sufficient to begin and sustain a professional career in the music field through core music classes; and to attain skills and attitudes necessary for the establishment and maintenance of a career as a professional musician, through specialized classes in this concentration. The major requirements of music theatre program cover the following courses: Survey of the music industry; Diction for Singers I; Diction for Singers II; music theatre history and analysis; junior or senior half recital; Opera History and Literature I and II; performance production; basic acting; visual aspects of theatre; music theatre performance; advanced music theatre performance; intermediate jazz dance; Intermediate Jazz II/Musical Theatre Styles; applied voice study; approved music, theatre or dance electives; and ensembles (one each semester). The following list of careers is only a small sample of possibilities: artists' manager, composer, conductor, entertainment lawyer, music educator, music journalist, music librarian, music software developer, orchestra manager, performing artist, professional accompanist, professor/teacher, or record producer.
