Since its creation, the National Polytechnic Institute was conceived to promote the generation of knowledge and the training of highly specialized human resources, responding to the needs that the country was facing at that time: to promote a process of industrial modernization and the reactivation of the productive apparatus.
Initially, scientific and technological research and then, due to the needs of the country's industrialization, research linked to postgraduate and undergraduate degrees has promoted academic development through postgraduate programs such as the Master's in Manufacturing Engineering with scientific orientation, which is the first postgraduate program of the IPN established in a collaborative network since 2005 between the Higher School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (ESIME) Azcapotzalco Unit, Zacatenco Unit, Ticomán Unit and the Interdisciplinary Professional Unit in Engineering and Advanced Technology (UPIITA), to respond to the training needs of human resources and scientific research required by manufacturing industries.
More than 90% of the country's manufacturing sector is made up of small and medium-sized companies, many of which lack the technological and economic capacity to be competitive and integrate into market globalization.
If it is taken into account that the four units that participate in this program are located in the northern zone of Mexico City, surrounded by the industrial zones of Vallejo, Xalostoc, Tlalnepantla and Naucalpan, which together represent 25% of the national GDP, enables the MIM to have a direct impact on technological development and basic and applied research required by manufacturing industries.
The international incidence of the MIM comes from taking advantage of the relations and prestige of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) to be in contact with both higher education institutions and foreign companies.
The MIM aims to cover the demand for training human resources in the field of manufacturing, capable of applying and developing innovative strategies at all stages of the life cycle of a product and acquiring sufficient foundations to continue with doctoral studies. Within the group responsible for the design of the master's program, professionals, graduates and teaching staff participated, with extensive experience in the productive sector, forming a multidisciplinary and collaborative group. The result was an innovative study program, which necessarily includes a bonding approach between the student and the productive sector through an industrial stay.
