Student life
We have a dedicated Student Support service to support you throughout your journey. Our bustling campus is situated in the south of Birmingham, the UK’s second city. A short bus ride takes you into the center where you can experience a vibrant and exciting mix of culture, sport, and entertainment.
Birmingham Newman’s Students’ Union is here for all students at our University. The Union puts students first and is one of the main ways to get involved in university life. We are here to represent your voice to the University to ensure you are getting the best from your University Experience.
Alongside that, we organise a range of societies, social events, and advice service to ensure you have a great student experience while you are at Birmingham Newman. The Union is led by students for students so react and adapt every year to meet your needs. Being a part of the Union, in whatever way you can is the best way to ensure you get the most from your Students’ Union and your time at Birmingham Newman.
Visit the Newman Students’ Union website to find out more.
– Your Voice
Birmingham Newman believes that the student's voice should be heard. To ensure this happens you can apply to become a Course Rep. Course Reps are the main point of call for students for course and university feedback. We also have Student Faculty Reps who support Course Reps at a departmental level to ensure that the student voice is heard and acted upon.
– Raise and Give
The Students’ Union strives to give students the opportunity to engage with local and national charity organisations that students are passionate about. We will give you the opportunity to raise money for charities you care about through a range of events and campaigns! All of this will allow you to develop your skills, meet new people, engage in fun activities, and give back to the community.
– Societies
We have a wide range of societies, and there’s sure to be something for you - but if not, why not start your own? All you need is a great idea to start your own society on anything you are interested in and we will help you develop that idea into an active group of like-minded students.
– Events and Activities
Whether you want a night out or just a chilled evening in front of the big screen, we run numerous exciting events throughout the year ranging from Freshers’ Week to movie nights, family fun days, coffee mornings, and themed nights at the bar.
– Advice Clinic
This is a free, independent, and confidential advice service. We can offer general advice on university processes, as well as guide you through academic or misconduct appeals or complaints. Our full-time StudentVoice & Advice Co-ordinator is available in the Union offices or by e-mail on weekdays from 8-4 pm, you can email the Advice Clinic at [email protected].
– Campaigns and Inclusion Projects
Our staff and officers regularly work on various inclusion projects and campaigns, some of our most successful being our Experience Panels, Period Poverty, and various accessibility campaigns such as gender-neutral toilets, portable hearing loops, and additional hearing loop signage.
Contact the Students’ Union president, and get more in-depth information.
Our Careers Service provides current students and graduates of up to three years, with high-quality career education, information, advice, and guidance, in a friendly, inclusive, impartial, and supportive setting. Every student will have a unique personalised career experience.
We want to make our students work-ready and equip them with effective career management skills, to successfully manage their career over their lifetimes and ultimately get the job or place on a postgraduate course that they want. Also, we are here to help students and recent graduates on their journey of self-discovery, broaden their horizons, show them all the wonderful opportunities available, and support their transition.
A dedicated team can help with finding part-time work, offer support in searching for work experience placements or volunteering, and offer support to gain a graduate job or place on a postgraduate course.
We do this through a variety of exciting activities and initiatives and work with academics and employers to enhance the employability of all our students and impact positively in the community.
To access the Careers Service students and graduates can log in to their My Career area, and then you will also find resources available. Additionally, if you would like to speak to someone about Newman’s Careers Service, please get in touch with us here.

This scholarship offers a £2,500 reduction on tuition fees and will be awarded upon application to study at the University.
Newman hopes this generous scholarship will offer talented international students, who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK, the opportunity to start an exciting and life-changing journey with the University as they embark on their postgraduate studies.
