The BFA in Musical Theatre is designed to provide outstanding pre-professional training within a liberal arts education. This interdisciplinary option requires course work in dance, music and theatre. In addition, all musical theatre students complete a strong core of liberal arts courses. Ball State University's B.F.A. in Musical Theatre is an interdisciplinary program offering students individual vocal instruction accompanied by weekly studio master classes and courses in musicianship (music theory, sight singing, piano, ensemble singing), as well as comprehensive acting and dance training. Our goal is to give our students the skills to enter the industry capable of handling a variety of styles, genres, and time periods within the musical theatre canon. The curriculum allows for exciting immersive learning and study abroad opportunities. Students have numerous on-campus workshops with professional casting directors and other industry professionals throughout their four years of training. Every year, we host internationally renowned distinguished guest artists. Past guests have included Joel Grey, David Shire, Walter Bobbie, Norbert Leo Butz, Christine Baranski, and Liz Callaway, among many others. The B.F.A. in Musical Theatre requires 85 credit hours. The lowest acceptable grade in a course for credit toward a major or minor in Theatre or Dance is C. Any student receiving a C- or lower must retake the course in order to receive credit towards a major or minor in the department. The repetition of a course does not remove the previous grades from the student’s official academic record. The last grade in a course will be used in computing the student’s grade-point average.
