The Department of Sharia, Faculty of Sharia and Law, Alasmarya Islamic University offers a Doctorate in Islamic
Jurisprudence. The program has 60 units and 4 courses (3 core courses and one elective
-out of two), and requires a minimum of 3 semesters of study for graduation.
This is one of the post-graduate programs in the department of Sharia.
It was established on 7th of June 2023 under decree No. (590). The mission of
the program is to prepare teaching staff members and distinguished researchers
capable of eliciting legitimate judgements based on contemporary circumstances
and events. In addition, the programs seeks to develop studies in Sharia in
order to satisfy current needs in accordance to the moderate Maliki School by
means of qualified and knowledgeable faculty aware of their religion, era and their
nation’s aspirations. The program’s broad goals can be summarized as; first, achieving
teaching staff self-sufficiency in the department. Second, contributing to the
efforts put towards minimizing the shortage in the teaching staff in the major
in other Libyan universities. Third, assist in finding legitimate solutions to
contemporary issues. Fourth, proper judgements on current controversial issues
in jurisprudence.
Other program goals include; first, equipping the students with in-depth
understanding in different aspects of jurisprudence which will enable them to
make suitable judgements and impartially weigh comparable judgements available.
Second, preparing the students to conduct quality research in jurisprudence
addressing different social and economic issues in the Libyan society. Third, preparing
highly qualified graduates in Islamic Jurisprudence in general and Maliki
thought in particular in order to fill in vacancies in research centers and Fatwa
Council. Fourth, equipping educational institutions and centers with highly
qualified teaching staff members in this major. Fifth, making knowledge in this
specialty accessible to students which in turn improve understanding current
issues and the way we judge them.
Graduates can pursue jobs in a number of areas. For example, they can
fill teaching staff positions in universities. Moreover, they can work in
Sharia Consultancy and researcher in relevant research centers. Graduate can
also work as audits in banks and insurance companies as well as Muftis in the
Libya Fatwa Council.
