The Sport and Exercise Psychology master's specialization is designed to help students develop a thorough understanding of the psychological principles related to sport and motor performance. This objective is achieved through classroom study, research and practicum experiences. At Ball State University, students are given unique opportunities. Class sizes are kept small to promote collaboration and personalized instruction. Students learn the basic concepts comprising the field of sport and exercise psychology from physiological, sociological, and psychological perspectives. Our curriculum is designed to allow students to develop as researchers and consultants. In order to help students further their research skills, they are expected to complete their own research projects, and they may also assist faculty members with their work. We also require students to attend professional conferences and help them obtain opportunities to present research and write grant proposals. This knowledge is then extended beyond the classroom and into the applied field. Students at Ball State work closely with the intercollegiate athletics department, club sport athletes, and athletes and exercisers in the Ball State and Muncie community at large. From a consulting standpoint, we encourage students to spend their first year shadowing a 2nd year student who is serving as a supervised performance enhancement consultant. In the second year, students provide educational workshops and mental skill sessions. Additionally, many of our students concurrently complete a minor in counseling, allowing them to learn more about the interpersonal skills needed to consult.
