For 75 years, many of the world’s finest maritime researchers — and their doctoral students — have built successful careers in Stevens’ renowned ocean engineering program. Stevens is located on the Hudson river, moments away from the New York Harbor, offering a premiere location to study marine transport systems. In addition to state-of-the-art research facilities, Ph.D. candidates have access to partnerships with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and various other maritime engineering firms. Two research vessels with state-of-the-art instrumentation and an array of high performance computing equipment provide ample opportunity to conduct field observations of estuaries, bays, and the coastal ocean. At Stevens, Ph.D. candidates can experiment in the nation’s largest university-based towing tank, collaborating with award-winning faculty — experts in oceanography, fluid dynamics, estuary enhancement and more. Students might work alongside the co-creator of the global standard for ocean modeling or the winner of the Office of Naval Research Young Investigators Award.
