The Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Hong Kong (HKU Business School) offers research postgraduate programmes leading to the degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Our PhD programme is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the key aspects of business and economics. Students are introduced to basic research tools and are expected to be able to conduct independent research in their fields of study. Through regular interactions with faculty, students also acquire a broader perspective on management and economic issues of the region and beyond. The PhD programme is offered on a full-time basis. Candidates pursuing PhD studies are first required to register provisionally for the degree and are subject to a probationary period.

The Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Hong Kong (HKU Business School) admits outstanding students to our full-time PhD programme, focusing on one of the six distinct fields of study. Applicants without a research Master's degree shall be considered for admission to the four-year PhD programme, while those with a research Master's degree shall be considered for admission to the three-year PhD programme.

If you’re an international student who’s interested in studying at HKU Business School's Masters Programmes, you will need to:

  • Hold a recognised degree or equivalent;
  • Obtain statements from two referees outlining your suitability for the program
  • Obtain a TOEFL/IELTS score if you are not from an English-medium university
