The course is for qualified nurses who want to gain a professional qualification in district nursing or general practice nursing. For those who hold either a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in nursing studies, it will enable students to top up their qualification to degree level. For those already have a nursing degree then they can progress onto Derby's MSc Community Specialist Practice. y completing this course students will demonstrate a critical understanding of clinical practice, care and programme management, clinical practice leadership, and clinical practice development. Programme content around diagnostic reasoning in clinical practice supports the development of autonomy and safe practice for non-medical prescribing. Students will be taught in a variety of ways including lectures, workshops, seminars and group discussions. Assessment will be conducted through assignments, exams, presentations and the production of a practice portfolio. Students will also be assessed on their placement by their practice teacher.

To join this course you will need:

  • To be registered on part one of the Nursing and Midwifery Council register
  • Have gained a student District Nurse or General Practice Nursing position from a seconding/sponsoring organisation
  • 120 credits at Diploma level, or equivalent academic credits / Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
  • Have at least one year of post-registration experience due to the requirements for the V100 prescribing and two years if taking the V300 Non-medical prescribing qualification (NMC 2006).
  • It will be the Employers responsibility to ensure that any necessary Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and health checks are carried out, proof of this and indemnity will be required prior to commencement of the Programme.
  • The student will have successfully applied for a clinical secondment/sponsorship with a local Care Provider/employer prior to applying for this Programme.
