V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University is one of the oldest public HEIs in Eastern Europe, with a 219-year history and the only in Ukraine with three Nobel Prize winners: biologist Ilya Mechnikov, economist Simon Kuznets, physicist Lev Landau.
Today, the University has one of the largest university campuses in Ukraine with 20 schools, e Educational and Research Institutes, a library, the Center for Contemporary Art "Yermilov Center", Henryk Siemiradzki Art Gallery, the Landau Center, a botanical garden and biological station, including 4 museums. Despite the ongoing war in Ukraine, the University has not been displaced and continues all its activities being still based in the city of Kharkiv with university administration and heads of all departments working from Kharkiv.
Karazin University positions itself as an open multilingual academic community providing high-quality, internationally recognized academic programmes in over 200 majors, covering the whole range of modern classical university education. With over 2500 academics, it provides teaching for about 20 000 students. Over 4,000 of them are international students from more than 68 countries of the world.
Since 2022 it is present in Munich (Germany) and has introduced new opportunities for the students of the School of Medicine in Georgia, Nigeria, Morocco, and the Republic of Mauritius. Medical students can not only study online, but also do practical training in Turkish clinics (Istanbul, Turkey).
The high level of education and scientific research is recognised by international rankings, numbers of research grants and patents, scientific publications in international scientometric databases Scopus and Web of Science, and determines the leading position of Karazin University in the country. Karazin University applies a student-oriented approach aimed at fast accommodation of their knowledge and skills to modern world realities. This is classics ahead of time.
Its internalization strategy defines priority areas for further advanced integration into the scientific and educational space of the EU and beyond. At the moment, the university cooperates with over 230 foreign and national institutions with partners from over 50 countries, including 17 EU countries. It is one of the initiators of Magna Charta Universitatum (Bologna, 1988), the member of the International Association of Universities and the European University Association, the associated member of the European Nuclear Education Network and others.
It actively participates in 13 international programs such Erasmus+, Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, projects of the British Council, DAAD and others with a total of 36 active international projects. Karazin university students have the opportunity to participate in international student exchange programs and go to study in EU countries; in 12 double degree programs with top EU universities in France, Poland, Italy, Germany, and Slovakia, etc. The University collaborates with numerous UA and international companies to ensure high employability of their students.
Based in Kharkiv, which is the former capital of Ukraine, the university is emerging as the heart of technology in Eastern Europe in the city with a recent boom of IT job opportunities. Kharkiv boasts a relatively low cost of living compared to other Ukrainian cities, a vital center of economic growth and rising political influence. It is the student capital as almost one third of all foreign students coming to Ukraine study in Kharkiv.
