This program is to prepare leaders for public and nonprofit organizations through an innovative curriculum and dedicated teaching; creating and disseminating knowledge to the field of public administration through interdisciplinary research and professional development activities; and serving the profession and the community in order to promote democratic governance and enhance quality of life. The MPA program has two components: the program core consisting of eight required courses that provide the basic concepts and methods of public administration plus, for pre-career students, an internship, and a set of electives suited to the student's career interests or an optional specialization designed to develop expertise in a particular substantive area. A minimum of 42 hours of graduate credit for pre-career students is required. For students with up to three years of full-time management experience at the time of admission, the number of required hours is reduced to 39; for students with more than three years of mid-level managerial experience, 36 hours of graduate credit are required.
