It is virtually impossible to imagine a society without TV, radio, Internet, and mobile communication. Communication Technologies and System Design is not only central to addressing tasks of importance to society, such as telemedicine, banking, train signalling systems, and monitoring, but people are also highly dependent on smartphones, social media, on-demand video streaming etc. Communication Technologies and System Design - the technology that forms the basis of modern society - relies on engineers capable of maintaining existing systems and developing and designing new ones.
The MSc Eng in Communication Technologies and System Design at DTU is unique in that all of the above aspects are incorporated into one MSc degree.
The study programme covers areas ranging from advanced component and system design through complex network structures to the development of services and ICT solutions that meet user expectations. The programme courses include three central, traditional disciplines which, to some extent, share a common technical-scientific basis. These are:
Component and software design This discipline addresses both the development of optical components, optical transmission systems, and electronic components—e.g. in the form of integrated circuits—and the design of telecommunication software, including signal-processing software.
System development and methods Courses offered within this discipline are mainly related to coding, communication networks, and multimedia. They address the basis for—and design of—technical communication systems as well as operation and monitoring of the systems.

Technical University of Denmark offers an international three-year English-taught BSc in General Engineering where you will learn to think and work as an engineer.
The study programme focuses on:
- the broad and general engineering competences.
- providing students with a solid grounding in mathematics, physics, and chemistry.
- work and study across disciplines to be able to apply them in solving actual problems.
Throughout the programme, students have the unique opportunity to work on design-build projects which are practice oriented. Students also work on an interdisciplinary group project where they propose an engineering solution to a specific problem from the real world. This familiarizes students with the engineering approach when it comes to solving problems which also teaches them to communicate and liaise with their group to find the best solutions in real-life settings – an essential element for engineers who wish to embark on a career on a global scale.
Please also note that spaces are limited with only 150 students admitted per academic intake.
Tuition fees
The tuition fee at Technical University of Denmark are €7,500 per semester (€15,000 per academic year) with payments made bi-annually at the beginning of each semester.
If you are an international student who is an EU/EEA citizen, you are not required to pay any tuition fees. In most circumstances, non-EU/EEA citizens will be required to pay tuition fees at DTU. However, some non-EU/EEA citizens may be exempt. If you are unsure as to whether you are required to pay tuition fees, you can find out by clicking here.
There are currently no scholarships, tuition fee waivers or any other forms of financial funding available at undergraduate level. For more information about tuition fees, visit the university’s website.
Entry requirements
You will need to fulfill the three sets of admissions requirements when applying to DTU:
1) The general admission requirement by having an upper secondary exam that equates a Danish upper secondary exam.
2) You must also have achieved certain grades in certain subjects.
3) Official proof of English proficiency.
Admissions process
To begin your application process, you must do so through the online application portal.
Please remember:
- To submit all necessary documentation, including your CV and personal statement (which must be written in English).

DTU offers 33 graduate programmes which cover all fields of engineering, many of which offer different study lines and focus areas for students to choose between. MSc programmes at DTU are 2 years in length and follow the flag model, with the 120 ECTS equally divided between general competences, technological specialization, electives, and the master's thesis. This gives each programme a unique flexible structure, where students can choose between hundreds of elective courses. This allows students to create their own, unique profile within engineering.
DTU also collaborates with other top universities around the world in offering 27 joint international MSc programmes.
Students are trained in advanced research methods where they learn to adopt a constructive and critical approach to research findings. They also learn to translate new knowledge into technical solutions and are encouraged to take responsibility for planning and executing projects by participating actively in discussions in order to develop their critical and analytical skills.
By the end of their graduate studies, students will have acquired the qualifications and skills necessary to analyze, synthesize and evaluate theory and experiments relating to complex engineering systems, problems, and solutions.
Tuition fees
Tuition fees at DTU for a master’s degree are €7,500 per semester (€30,000 for a full two-year master's degree) which must be paid per semester, or in one lump sum.
If you are an international student who is interested in studying at Technical University of Denmark, special funding is also available. Options include:
Tuition fee waivers
Every year, DTU awards a limited number of tuition fee waivers to new non-EU MSc students with an excellent academic record. Tuition fee waivers are awarded on academic merit and cover tuition fees for two years. To be considered, you must submit a separate personal statement alongside your initial application indicating your interest in being awarded the tuition fee waiver.
Scholarships
DTU does not offer additional scholarships, and students are encouraged to look for external means of financing. You may visit the DTU website for further information.
