Health Information Management (HIM) students can begin their career by earning a certificate in coding. Along with an American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) credential, the medical coding certificate prepares you for jobs in all types of medical facilities, inpatient and outpatient, and other industry-related positions such as insurance companies and government agencies. Health information technology (HIT) professionals with an associate degree pursue registration through the AHIMA as registered health information technicians (RHIT). RHITs are responsible for the quality of patient health information in acute care hospitals, physician offices, and other outpatient facilities. Students in the on-campus and online Health Information Management degree program study diagnosis and procedure coding, health information management, healthcare reimbursement, legal aspects of health information and health information technology. The Health Information Management (HIM) program includes courses in anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology with pharmacology, medical terminology, ICD-9-CM and ICD-9-CM coding, ICD-10-PCS coding, CPT and HCPCS coding, as well as reimbursement methodologies. Legal aspects of HIM are covered, as well as information technology and health information management.
