The Physics Department is one of the major centres for Physics teaching and research within the University of London. Our research themes range from fundamental studies of the properties of matter to advanced applications of Physics to the invisible components of the cosmos. Research centres at Royal Holloway Department of Physics: The Condensed matter theme connects the fundamental study of quantum matter, nanophysics and nanotechnology, to applied technologies such as terahertz imaging for healthcare. The Particle Physics theme covers the science and technology of particle accelerators and particle beams, the physics of particle collisions at the energy frontier, data acquisition and data analysis. The Theoretical Physics theme spans the fundamental interactions of particles, strongly correlated systems and atomic gases, and the impact of particle physics on cosmology. The Particle Astrophysics theme studies the properties of the invisible universe, with experimental searches for dark matter, neutrino oscillations, and detector development at the low energy frontier. Research is carried out in modern fabrication facilities and research laboratories in the department and at major international laboratories such as CERN, ISIS, DIAMOND, SNOLAB, KEK, J-PARC. The department also collaborates with other institutions in the UK and across the world.
