The crux of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University (MJPRU)'s basic philosophy finds eloquent expression in its motto “CharaivetiCharaiveti ( चरैवेित चरैवेित ) an aphorism from the Aitareya Brahmana, which exhorts it to move on and keep moving. Constantly moving forward in the right direction is the key to success. The University is always on the move, girding up its loins with grit and determination to explore new frontiers of knowledge with the objective of serving society and making the lives of people healthier and more meaningful.
The Rohilkhand University was established in 1975 as an affiliating University; with its headquarters in Bareilly, to cater for the growing demand for a centre of higher education in the Rohilkhand region. The status of the university was upgraded to affiliating-cum-residential university in 1984 when four teaching departments were established on the campus. In 1986 three more Departments were added. The University took a major step in 1995 by introducing additional professional courses in Engineering & Technology, Management, Education & Allied Sciences, etc. In August 1997, Rohilkhand University has renamed Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University after the great social reformer and thinker of the nineteenth century who was also a pioneer for women's education in India.
Today MJPRU is an educational federation of University Campus Departments and Colleges spread over nine districts of Western Uttar Pradesh stretching to 31,287 square kilometres and sheltering more than thirty million people with over five lakh sixty thousand students. There are Six Faculties and Twenty four Departments on the University Campus spread over a lush green area of 206.7 acres, 09 constituent colleges and 578 affiliated colleges that prepare the students for graduate, post-graduate, and doctoral degrees courses, and have many certificates and diploma programmes, in various fields of study. MJPRU imparts education through its six faculties, 24 departments offering 50 programmes covering a broad range of disciplines and promoting inter-disciplinary learning thereby creating a wide hub of the knowledge-based educational system.
MJPRU is a truly multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary university by virtue of having almost all of the major as well minor streams of global knowledge, subjects, disciplines, and courses/programmes either on its campus or on the premises of the constituent/affiliated colleges. It has been at the forefront of universities in the country and state in adopting and implementing NEP 2020.
The University has a researcher-responsive, modernized research policy to encourage high quality rigorous, comprehensive research duly approved by the Honourable Chancellor. The research facilities are regularly reviewed and updated to support the undergoing research work as under-.
The Directorate of Research (DoR) is established to conduct workshops and activities for newly appointed supervisors and their scholars through its well-developed automated Research Management System (RMS). At present 1336 research scholars are pursuing their research in different disciplines.
The Centre of Excellence &ShodhPeeth: established with funding from the U.P. State Government, the University has established Pt. DeenDayalShodhPeeth and Centre of Excellence in various Departments viz, Plant Science, Applied and Regional Economics, MBA, Education, and Animal Science that facilitate knowledge creation and dissemination in their respective disciplines.
INNOVATIVE RESEARCH GRANT (IRG)- of the university motivates the regular faculty of the university and its affiliated colleges to conduct innovative research. The policy accelerates inter- faculty/college collaboration in emerging areas that will support the receivers with a sum of Rs.5lacs of rupees to conduct the projects in a science discipline and Rs.2 lacs in Social Sciences and Humanities discipline.
The University with its Policy for Direct Admission in Ph.D. Programs invite online applications for direct admission to the Ph.D. (Full time) program in the Academic year, for the candidates having fellowship with them at the State/National level. The university has also started offering Part-time Ph.D. in different subjects per clauses 3.1 and 4.5 of the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Ordinance 2020.
Research Initiatives for Award of D.Sc./ D.Litt.- The university has come up with newly created regulations and guidelines to strengthen the research level by pursuing the above degree through high- quality publication and application-based studies for the use of the different stakeholders.

Many new professional programmes such as Integrated Dual Degree M.Tech.-Ph.D. programme has been started from current academic session in Computer Science& Information Technology, Electronics& communication, Electronics and Instrumentation and Thermal Engineering, Industrial and Production Design in accordance to NEP-2020. Similarly, been initiated from current academic session. The performance of student’s and thus learning outcomes are measured constantly and consistently through well designed and transparent evaluation mechanism, where mid semester tests, quizzes, assignments, projects, workshops, seminars and conferences etc. are being conducted followed by end semester examination at the end of each semester.
