Lingnan University (LU) and South China Normal University (SCNU) have launched a joint PhD supervision in Sociology and/or Social Policy* programme since the 2022 intake.

Highlights

Under this joint supervision collaboration:

  • Students studying the relevant master’s degree programmes or in-service young teachers can submit applications to LU.
  • Students will receive joint supervision from a Chief Supervisor from LU and a Co-supervisor from SCNU throughout their 3-year studies. Both supervisors will closely supervise the students’ studies.
  • LU will provide each student a monthly stipend of HK$5,000 during their first 1.5 years of study at LU, and SCNU supervisors will provide each of their students a certain amount of sponsorship based on individual situations during their remaining 1.5 years at SCNU.
  • Upon graduation, students will be conferred a PhD degree in Sociology and/or Social Policy by LU.

* Admittees of PhD Sociology and/or Social Policy programme will be invited to opt for a programme title of 'PhD Sociology', 'PhD Social Policy' or 'PhD Sociology and Social Policy' in consultation with the Supervisor.

An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of PhD should normally:

a) hold a master's degree awarded by a tertiary education institution recognised for this purpose by the University; or

b) hold a relevant bachelor's degree with first or second class honours or at an equivalent standard, and have registered in a programme of study for a master's degree at a recognised tertiary education institution for at least one year and have evidence of research achievement; or

c) have obtained an equivalent qualification of a) or b) above; or

d) have provided satisfactory evidence of academic and professional attainment.

To be eligible for postgraduate study at Lingnan University, you would need a relevant first-class or second-class degree from a recognised institution (or any international equivalent). For PhDs, you would also need a master's degree.
