About Jimma University

Jimma University (JU) is one of the largest and oldest public universities in Ethiopia, having been founded in 1997 as a result of the expansion of the Institute of Health Sciences (which had existed since 1983) through the opening of the faculties of Business and Economics and Engineering and Technology. According to Council of Ministers Proclamation No. 63/1999, it was re-established two years later, in 1999, by merging with the then-Jimma College of Agriculture (established in 1952). JU is the pioneer and leading university in Community-Based Education (CBE), an innovative teaching-learning philosophy that takes training into the community and uses the community as a source of knowledge and practice for students, thereby bridging the gap in skills (problem solving) and attitude change among our students. Its motto, We are in the Community, expresses its dedication to community engagement and service to society. There are two complex teaching institutes, four research institutes, and six research centers at the university. In addition, Jimma University has six prestigious colleges: the college of agriculture and veterinary sciences; the college of natural sciences; the college of social sciences and humanities; the college of education and behavioral sciences; the college of business and economics; the college of law and governance; and cross-border campuses in Hargeisa and Somaliland. The University's research wing consists of four research institutes and six research centers: tropical and infectious diseases research center; mycobacteriology research center; molecular biology research center; JU laboratory of drug quality research center; and Gilgel Gibe Field Research Center. Jimma University has important research and teaching partnerships with many national and international institutions. This helps to create a culture of excellence in research and advanced training programs that are in line with how people see Jimma University locally and around the world.
