BA in English students at HPU come to understand the English language through its historical development in literature in various cultures, since English is the adopted tongue of many writers across the globe and a language into which literary texts from many other cultures are translated. HPU English majors study a variety of literary texts in historical, cultural, theoretical, and practical contexts. They practice critical and analytical writing alongside creative writing, in order to enrich their lives as well as prepare for a variety of graduate programs and careers. Program Objectives Students who major in English will: Develop transferable analytical skills such as the ability to summarize, interpret, and evaluate complex texts. Develop transferable communication skills such as writing clearly and persuasively, revising and editing their own and others' writing, and making effective oral presentations. Employ appropriate research methods to locate and evaluate information and will effectively present their own arguments with support from primary and secondary texts. Recognize and analyze various textual forms and strategies in academic and creative genres. Practice various textual strategies in academic and creative genres. Examine the ways in which texts shape and/or are shaped by history, culture, and context. Experience and analyze diverse texts from various cultures. Articulate or identify important theoretical concepts and approaches and apply them in interpreting or analyzing texts.
