Presentation
The Higher School of Biological Sciences of Oran, also known as the Ecole Supérieure en Sciences Biologiques d'Oran (ESSBO) in French, aims to be a leading institution in higher education, scientific research, and technological development in the fields of biotechnology and biological sciences.
ESSBO was established by transforming the Preparatory School of Nature and Life Sciences in accordance with Executive Decree No. 304-17 of 22 October 2017.
ESSBO's primary objective is to provide students with high-quality training in molecular biology, enzymatic engineering, and immunotechnology. This training enables students to master the theoretical and practical foundations of these specializations through theoretical courses, practical workshops, and internships in specialized institutions.
Admission Requirements
Admission to the school is open to distinguished baccalaureate degree holders or those holding a recognized equivalent foreign diploma, according to conditions set by the Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research. Selected students undergo a two-year undergraduate preparatory course within the school.
Orientation at the End of Preparatory Classes
After successfully passing the national contest, second cycle admitted students are oriented towards fields or specialties provided by ESSBO training or other schools offering the same field of training. This is done according to specific criteria that are essentially based on the contest grade, the wishes expressed by the student, and the capacity of the host school.
Profiles and Targeted Skills
Second Cycle training allows students to deepen their practical and theoretical knowledge of nucleic acids and proteins, as well as secondary metabolites of different natures and origins. This training also introduces students to the manipulation and transformation of these molecules for various purposes, such as the production of valuable metabolites of interest, the development of new diagnostic methods for animal or plant use, molecular identification of pathogens, and GMOs. Graduates can achieve this by producing kits for biochemistry, molecular biology, and immunological diagnostics for didactic use, diagnosis, and/or research. The school training mainly aims to create startups. All the workshops during the training initiate and encourage the emergence of small businesses based on the know-how.
Regional and National Potential for Graduate Employment
The second cycle is primarily a high-level academic training that aims to train executives in research fields or in research and development departments, whether in public service or private sector companies. It is also a training that encourages the creation of startups. By acquiring and mastering the knowledge during their training, ESSBO's graduates should easily join medical analysis or quality control laboratories, thus enhancing the use of molecular biology tools in these structures. Additionally, graduates can join any biotechnology company producing biological materials, different research centers (diagnostic assistance, biotechnology, green chemistry, proteomics), and/or molecular biology laboratories.
Graduate students also have the opportunity to pursue postgraduate training (PhD) to be hired as a researcher or teacher-researcher in the public service (universities, research centers, etc.) or in some interesting positions in the private sector.

Selected students are subjected to a two-year undergraduate preparatory course within the school
The multidisciplinary training during the preparatory cycle allows students to acquire effective working methods as well as all the knowledge and skills expected from an engineer such as critical and analytical thinking, communication and redaction skills reapplied to a scientific background and several practical experimentations.
The preparatory cycle is based on various tutoring and assessing methods (courses, tutorials, practical work, conferences, seminars and personal work). The cycle benefits from the Higher School renovated infrastructure, specialized laboratories and qualified teaching staff.
The preparatory cycle also allows students to sit for many examinations to enter the second cycle of national Higher Schools. Moreover, students have the possibility to continue their studies after the preparatory classes at our Higher School in the engineering specialty of their choice.
ESSBO has three (03) agreed specializations:
