To achieve this, the programme’s course of study focuses on the careful analysis of local and global socio-cultural dynamics through the application of a multidisciplinary approach that seeks to overcome the traditional dichotomy between answers to environmental problems that emerge from disciplines related to “nature” and those that emerge from considerations of “culture”. In an era that is ever more characterised by complex multi-ethnic societies and migratory phenomena caused by climate change, the programme course addresses environmental issues from a global and intercultural perspective in order to enhance the relationship models between humans, nonhuman species and the biosphere that are typical of different societies, also from a historical point of view. The history and location of Venice makes Ca’ Foscari a particularly special place for the development of Environmental Humanities. A historic crossroads of civilisations yet also a famously fragile city affected by global tourism and climate change, Venice facilitates and encourages critical reflection and creative responses. The course therefore also explores the context of the Venetian lagoon’s ecosystem and the interaction with the city’s cultural and artistic scene, under the guidance of professors, external professionals and environmental scientists.
