Literacy education is the process of teaching fundamental reading, writing and other communication skills. Literacy skills are critical to education because they are necessary for learning in every subject area. The graduate literacy education program will teach you how to design and teach literacy programs for diverse learners of all ages. You’ll learn literacy education best practices and gain an in-depth understanding of how to plan literacy instruction. ASU’s literacy program goes beyond reading and writing to include several other digital literacies that are essential to the 21st century. These other forms of literacy include new technology use, digital media and visual images. In the program, you’ll learn how to use technology to enhance learning and teach these new digital literacies. In your courses, you’ll work with tenured faculty who are leaders in literacy education. The faculty members who design and teach courses in this degree have served as leaders in literacy education professional organizations and consulted on literacy projects across the U.S.
