Prepare for a career in the dynamic construction industry with our quantity surveying course. Today’s construction industry is facing the challenges of globalisation, climate change, demanding clients and a complex regulatory framework. This course will give you the skills to deal with these challenges. You’ll develop the intellectual and practical competences required by professional bodies such as Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). You’ll leave with a broad knowledge of the legal, technical, managerial, economic, social and environmental aspects of construction projects, and be able to confidently manage both commercial and civil engineering projects. You'll gain expertise in cost management, procurement and quantification skills. You’ll also develop expertise in risk management, costing techniques, design economics, buildability, procurement, ability to add value and an appreciation of people from different cultural backgrounds and construction disciplines. Our accreditation from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors ensures our course has the best industry links, as well as relevant, up-to-date content. It’s an exciting time to study in Birmingham – the city is undergoing huge regeneration. This means that there are many opportunities, now and in the future, for those with built environment qualifications. Our Built Environment courses are placed 11th out of 59 institutions in the Guardian University League Tables 2018. Also, in 2017, we are spending £8.7 million on improvements to our Millennium Point facilities so you’ll have even more access to dedicated, industry-standard equipment.

Foundation years/Year 0 courses: Foundation years (sometimes called Year 0 courses) are designed for students who don’t meet the entry requirements for a particular degree course, and enable them to develop their learning to an appropriate standard in preparation for Year 1 of the degree.Foundation degrees: If your qualifications are slightly below those required for direct entry onto a Bachelor’s degree, Foundation degrees may offer an alternative route to a full undergraduate degree.Higher National Certificates/Higher National Diplomas: Higher National Certificates (HNC) and Higher National Diplomas (HND) are vocational qualifications which often include practical elements as well as theory. It is often possible to ‘top up’ these qualifications to a Bachelor’s degree through further relevant study.Certificate/Diploma in Higher Education: These are similar to HNC and HND qualifications in terms of levels of study achieved. They can potentially be ‘topped up’ to a full Bachelor’s degree in a related subject area.Bachelor’s degree: This is a full undergraduate degree qualification. Bachelor’s degrees normally take three or four years to complete on a full-time basis - they can also be studied part-time.
