Because competence in contemporary neuroscience demands in-depth knowledge of neurobiology, three courses are required in addition to a course on ethics of neuroscience research: a general course in Neurobiology, an advanced level neuroscience course offered by the Department of Neuroscience covering the structure and function of the human nervous system, and a reading/discussion group covering the classic literature in Neuroscience. Graduate students are also required to be teaching assistants for two semesters. Beyond the required courses, the training program is individually designed to meet the interests and needs of each student. Faculty actively participate in the design of each student's program and are always available for consultation and discussion. To acquaint students with research methods and to provide opportunities to interact with faculty in a research environment, laboratory rotations are undertaken during the first year. These rotations also serve to introduce a student to a laboratory which he/she might choose for thesis research. Rotations are arranged in consultation with the faculty and provide laboratory experiences for 3 to 4 month periods.
