Birkbeck's BA Human Geography with Foundation Year gives students a deeper understanding of the complex processes that shape our contemporary social, political, economic and cultural life. It focuses on how we interact with each other and the environment, exploring the relationship between culture, identity, space and place, to appreciate the multiple connections between humans and the physical landscapes they inhabit. The first year of this programme will cover key contemporary issues such as globalisation, identity, racism, nationalism, community and diaspora, the city and urban inequality, international development and poverty. Upon successful completion of the Foundation Year, students can automatically progress on to the three-year, full-time, evening study BA Human Geography. Birkbeck offers local and international field trips, catering to a range of themes in human geography including urbanisation, gender and globalisation. Birkbeck teaching takes place in the evening, enabling students to work and study at the same time. Students will study in small classes with internationally recognised researchers, interacting with fellow students, some of whom are already working in relevant sectors. Graduates can pursue careers in voluntary sector organisations, local government and education. This degree may also be useful in becoming a charity officer, civil service administrator, local government officer or social researcher.
