Graduates in Physiotherapy, in accordance with the guidelines of the European Union, will have to:

  • know the notions necessary for the understanding of biological phenomena relating to the organization and functioning mechanisms of higher organisms;
  • know the notions necessary for understanding human anatomy and physiology, with particular regard to the physiology of movement and cognitive processes;
  • know the physiological basis of psychic and motor development;
  • understand the fundamentals of physiopathology in different clinical situations;
  • know the scientific and cultural bases of the general rehabilitation methodology and in the various specialized sectors;
  • understand and apply the codification of the state of health according to the International Code of Function (ICF);
  • being able to identify and evaluate the manifestations connected to the course of the main diseases, treatment, lifestyle habits, reactions to the disease, hospitalization and assistance interventions;
  • be able to identify the physical, psychological and social needs in the areas susceptible to functional recovery of individuals of different ages, cultures and health conditions and of the communities in the various social areas;
  • being able to identify the preventive and rehabilitative needs of the subjects through an evaluation of clinical data that takes into account the motor, psychomotor, cognitive and functional changes, and the coherence, entity and significance of the symptoms;
  • know how to elaborate and execute the individual rehabilitation program, independently or in a multidisciplinary team, in the context of the individual and structural rehabilitation project, in the various specialized sectors (orthopedic, trauma, neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular, oncological, critical area, maternal-infant area, etc.) or by identifying the rehabilitation objectives;
  • identifying the methods and times for applying the most appropriate rehabilitation techniques on the basis of scientific evidence;
  • using, according to the prescriptions and indications of the doctor, physical, manual, kinesitherapy, psychomotor and occupational therapies, taking into account the relative indications and contraindications;
  • quantifying the results of the rehabilitation intervention,
  • how to interact with the Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine Specialist, as a direct and privileged reference for the definition of the rehabilitation project and for the evaluation of the outcome, in therapeutic contexts where the specialist himself has the overall clinical responsibility of the patient;
  • know how to plan and implement prevention and health education interventions aimed at healthy people and education interventions aimed at self-management of disability and rehabilitation;
  • knowing how to recognize the main reactions of the person to illness, suffering, disability and hospitalization, respecting the behavioral differences linked to the culture to which they belong;
  • be able to establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with the individual, with his family and with the social context, aimed at implementing the prevention or rehabilitation program;
  • knowing how to act in compliance with the legal regulations and the disciplinary, ethical and deontological principles of the physiotherapist profession;
  • have the knowledge to promote the actions necessary to overcome the limitations to the autonomy of the person resulting from disability, the removal of architectural barriers, the promotion of mobility, both in the workplace and in the home, in relation to the state health of the individual and the current sector legislation;
  • help organize rehabilitation activities through the definition of priorities, the appropriate use of available resources, also in collaboration with other health professionals, ensuring continuity of care and using tools for quality control;
  • know the basics of the research methodology and be able to participate in or develop research programs, applying the results in order to improve the quality of the treatment;
  • being able to carry out study, teaching and professional consultancy activities, in health services and in those where the professional skills of a physiotherapist are required; - know the radiation protection standards provided for by the European Union directives (Legislative Decree No. 187 of 26 May 2000). Students will acquire adequate knowledge of the English language for communication and IT skills equal to those necessary for ECDL start certification.

Tuition fees

The University of Milan is a public institution. Therefore, the university offers lower tuition fees in proportion to income, with fees being curbed in order to guarantee, to the greatest possible extent, the right for every student to have the opportunity to study. 

For international students, enrolment fees vary according to the student’s citizenship and can vary between €156 to maximum of €1,156 each academic year.

The University of Milan also offers scholarships and other special funding, such as refectory and accommodation services. Enrolled students can apply for a scholarship, depending on whether they’re based on merit, income or both.

The Excellence Scholarships program is particularly aimed at international students. The program offers 100 incentive grants to the newly enrolled best international students at master’s level. The incentives include 50 scholarships of €6,000 plus enrollment fee exemption.

Entry requirements

Those who hold, or are about to complete a bachelor's degree (or equivalent title) by the end of December or by the deadline indicated in the Program Structure for the selected master's degree program may apply to enroll on a postgraduate degree program. 

Graduates who wish to apply for a doctoral program or a medical specialization school must follow the instructions in the competitive examination announcements.

For specific entry requirements you should also consult the master’s degree program that you’re interested in applying to. 

European citizens, non-EU citizens who reside in Italy with a current, valid “permesso di soggiorno” (residence permit) and natives of Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Lichtenstein can apply. Non-EU citizens who are residents abroad must submit a pre-application request to the Italian Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence.

Some master degree programs have open admissions (on the basis of a case-by-case evaluation of the student candidature). Other programs will require candidates to sit an admission tests in order to ensure they are eligible for their chosen course of study.
