Top Universities in China by Subject

There are also two development studies universities in this year’s ranking in China: Fudan University and Zhejiang University, which both rank at 51-100.

11 universities to study earth and marine sciences are found in China. Of these, Peking University is the highest ranked this year, in 30^th place.

Peking University is the highest-ranking university in China for economics and econometrics in joint 25^th place. There are 22 other economics and econometrics universities in the rankings this year in China.

China has five universities in the rankings this year where you can study education. Beijing Normal University rises four places this year to take the top spot in 25^th place.

35 Chinese universities are featured in the subject ranking for electrical and electronic engineering in 2020. Four of these feature in the worldwide top 50, including top ranking Tsinghua University in 11^th, Peking University in 27^th, Shanghai Jiao Tong University in joint 29^th and Zhejiang University (falling eight places to 47^th).

34 top engineering and technology universities are located in China. Eight of these are in the world top 100, with Tsinghua University once again ranking top in China in ninth place. Other notable universities include University of Science and Technology of China, which rises six places this year to 67^th and Beijing Institute of Technology, which climbs 13 places to joint 167^th.

Of the 14 universities featured in the rankings for English language and Literature, Peking University comes out on top, in 44^th position, after rising seven places this year.

China is home to 30 environmental sciences universities, including three in the world top ten. Tsinghua University places first China for environmental science, rising four places this year to rank joint ninth. Zhejiang University performs well, rising eight places to joint 43^rd place. This year’s subject rankings also features seven new entrants in China for environmental science.

Peking University is the top university of the nine Chinese universities featured in this year’s subject ranking for geography, rising two places this year to 14^th in the world.

Peking University is the number one history school in China, and there are five other top history universities to choose from in this year’s ranking.

China is home to 14 top law schools, including Peking University which, once again, comes out on top, in 23^rd place.

There are three top universities in China where you can study library and information management, all of which are placed in the world top 50. The highest-ranking university of these is Wuhan University, rising an incredible 12 places this year to rank joint 35^th.

24 of the world’s best universities to study life sciences and medicine can be found in China. Peking University is once again ranked the highest, claiming 53^rd place in the world rankings for life sciences and medicine, rising five places this year, followed by Fudan University, in 82^nd. 

14 of the world’s best universities to study linguistics are located in China, with Peking University the world leader in 16^th.

Tsinghua University is the highest ranked of the 42 universities, ranking 9^th in the world. University of Science and Technology of China also performs well this year, rising nine places to rank joint 40^th.

There are 37 Chinese universities in the subject rankings for mathematics in 2020, including nine new entrants this year. Coming out on top this year for mathematics in China is Tsinghua University, rising five places this year to 20^th.

33 of the mechanical, aeronautical and mechanical engineering universities featured in this year’s subject ranking are located in China. Of these, Tsinghua University ranks the highest, retaining its spot in 14^th place this year.

Peking University once again ranks the highest in China, this time for its medicine course. There are currently 23 excellent medical schools in China, including five new entries this year.

All of the three mineral and mining engineering schools in China are featured in the world top 50 of the subject rankings in 2020. Wuhan University is the best of these, in 26^th place this year.

15 top modern language schools are located in China, including three in the world top 50: Peking University (9^th), Fudan University (26^th) and Tsinghua University (rising 10 places to 38^th this year).

Seven of China’s 35 natural science universities are ranked in the top 100 worldwide, with Tsinghua University on top in 16^th place, after rising three places this year.

There are only two ranked Chinese nursing schools in this year’s subject rankings: Fudan University and Peking University, both placing 51-100^th.

China’s sole entrant for performing arts this year in the subject ranking is Central Academy of Drama, China in 40^th place.

Up three places to 12^th place worldwide, Peking University is the best university in China for pharmacy and pharmacology. 18 other Chinese institutions are also ranked.

Retaining its place in 32^nd this year, Philois Renmin (People’s) University of China remains the top philosophy school in China. There are 10 other Chinese universities in the philosophy rankings this year.

A staggering 39 Chinese universities are featured in this year’s physics and astronomy subject rankings in 2020. In the top place is Tsinghua University, climbing three places to reach joint 15^th this year.

Of the six politics and international relations universities in China, Tsinghua University comes out on top, in 36^th place.

There are eight Chinese psychology schools in this year’s subject rankings, including top ranking Peking University, which rises four places to claim joint 47^th in the world.

Three of the six universities in the 2020 subject rankings for social policy and administration are in the world top 50. Peking University is, once again, the highest ranked, in 26^th place.

China is home to 19 excellent social sciences and management schools, with six of these in the world top 100, including the top ranked university for social sciences and management, Peking University, in 20^th place worldwide.

Peking University is, once again, in the top spot in the subject rankings in China – this time for sociology, where it rises five places to steal joint 21^st place. There are also 10 other sociology schools in China.

Of the sports related subjects, there is only one entry in China this year; Peking University ranks in 51-100^th place worldwide.

An admirable 17 Chinese universities can be found in the ranking for statistics and operational research this year. Tsinghua University comes out on top in joint 16^th, after rising three places this year.

Only two Chinese universities can be found in the theology, divinity and religious studies subject rankings this year: Fudan University, dropping 20 places this year and Renmin (People’s) University of China, falling seven places – both ranking 51-100^th.
