The recently released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020 features 601 of the best universities to study computer science in the world – with 32 of these located in Mainland China

The QS World University Rankings by Subject are based on four indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper and the H-index (a way of measuring the productivity and published work of a scientist or scholar). One of five universities in China ranked at 151-200 worldwide, Xi’an Jiaotong University is ranked joint eighth in the country. The university scores particularly well in the research citations per paper and the H-index indicators. 

Graduates from the computer science school at Xi’an Jiaotong University have gone on to be employed by companies including IBM, Microsoft, Baidu, Tencent, Ali and Huawei, amongst others.

Wuhan University is also in eighth place in China (and ranked 151-200 worldwide), achieving a notably high score in the H-index indicator.

The university boasts many esteemed alumni in the field of computer science, including Liu Jingan, founder of Xiaomi, one of China’s largest technology companies.

Ranked at 151-200 worldwide and joint eighth in China for computer science is Guangzhou’s Sun Yat-sen University which achieves high scores in the research citations per paper and the H-index indicators.

The School of Data and Computer Science (SCDS) at the university is home to three national labs: The Digital Home Engineering Research Center, the Digital Home Interactive Application Lab and the Chips and Systems Lab for Internet of Things.

Another Chinese computer science program ranked at 151-200 worldwide and joint eighth in China is Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in Wuhan. The program achieves particularly impressive scores for the research citations per paper and the H-index ranking indicators.

Computer science students at HUST have the opportunity to participate in a number of international events including the Microsoft Imagine Cup, ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest, and the International Supercomputing Conference.

The final Chinese university to be found at the 151-200 worldwide rank is Harbin Institute of Technology. The university achieves the second highest score in China for the H-index ranking indicator, with a score of 93 out of 100.

The school of computer science and technology at Harbin has exchange programs with many universities across the globe, including Carnegie Mellon University, Queen’s University Belfast and Bordeaux University.

7) Nanjing University

Ranked at 101-150 worldwide and seventh in China for computer science is Nanjing University. The program scores highly in the research citations per paper and the H-index ranking indicators.

Nanjing University’s department of computer science and technology was founded in 1958 and conferred the first doctoral degree in Computer Software in Mainland China.

Zhejiang University is ranked at 51-100 in the world, and joint fourth in China for computer science. The university scores highly across the majority of indicators, particularly employer reputation, research citations per paper and the H-index.

The university is located in the city of Hangzhou, home to the Hangzhou Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone (HHTZ). The HHTZ positions itself as the Silicon Valley of China and is home to the headquarters of the Alibaba Group, China's largest website in terms of market value.

The University of Science and Technology of China is also in joint fourth place in China for computer science, achieving a particularly high score for the H-index ranking indicator.

Undergraduate computer science programs at the University of Science and Technology of China take four years to complete. The first two years focus on fundamental theories and basic knowledge, with students choosing subjects according to their interests for the final two years.

Shanghai’s Fudan University takes joint fourth place in China for computer science, ranked at 51-100 worldwide. The university scores highly across the majority of indicators, particularly employer reputation, research citations per paper and the H-index.

Fudan University has many notable alumni in the field of technology, including president of the online services group at Microsoft, Qi Lu, and president of the Alibaba Group, Jianhang Jin. 

3) Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Ranked third in China and 34th in the world for computer science is Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which achieves the fourth highest score in the country for the H-index ranking indicator.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the university has five core research areas: computer science theory, parallel and distributed computing, intelligence and human computer interaction, cryptography and information security and computer applications.

2) Peking University

Second in China and joint 19th in the world is Peking University, located the Chinese capital, Beijing. The university scores highly across all ranking indicators, including the second-highest score in the country for employer reputation.

The School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) is the largest department at Peking University, with 12 research institutes and around 390 faculty members.

Tsinghua University takes the top spot in China for computer science, ranking 13th globally. It achieves the highest scores in the country across all ranking indicators, with a particularly high score of 98.1 out of 100 in the H-index. 

The computer science school at Tsinghua offers students a chance to participate in many extracurricular competitions, including their own Tsinghua Artificial Intelligence Programming Contest which requires participants to develop AI (Artificial Intelligence) programs for playing games.
