The new ranking features 100 of the world’s leading universities for anthropology, spread across a total of 30 countries.

Top universities for anthropology in the US and Canada
The United States dominates in the ranking with 31 entrants, including six in the top 10. Outside of the top 10 (above), other US institutions featuring among the top 20 universities for anthropology are Columbia University, Yale University and New York University (NYU).
Over in neighboring Canada, five universities are ranked among the 100 top anthropology schools, including the University of Toronto and the University of British Colombia at 12th and joint 24th.
Top universities for anthropology in Europe
A total of 37 of the world’s top universities for anthropology are located in Europe, 12 of which are in the UK. Close behind the three UK entrants found in the top 10, UCL (University College London) just misses out on a top 10 placing, at 11th.
The Netherlands has four entrants in the ranking, including the University of Amsterdam at 15th. Other notable European entries include Denmark’s University of Copenhagen (20th), Germany’s Freie Universität Berlin (joint 29th) and Finland’s University of Helsinki (44th).
Top universities for anthropology in Australia and New Zealand
After Australian National University in the top 10, the next top performing Australian university for anthropology is the University of Melbourne at 17th. Another eight Australian universities are ranked within the top 100 in this subject. Meanwhile New Zealand has two representatives in the ranking, led by the University of Auckland in 49th place.
Top universities for anthropology in Latin America
Heading to Latin America, four countries in this region feature at least one university in the top 100 for anthropology. The highest ranking Latin American entries are Mexico’s Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in joint 29th, Brazil’s Universidade de São Paulo (34th) and Argentina’s Universidad de Buenos Aires (39th). Chile also features twice in the ranking.
Top universities for anthropology in Asia, Africa & the Middle East
Seven universities in Asia feature among the best anthropology departments, with the leading entrants being Singapore’s National University of Singapore (NUS) at 22nd and Japan’s University of Tokyo at 27th. China, South Korea, Hong Kong and India claim one entry each, all ranked in the 51-100 range.
Over in the Middle East, Israel appears once in the anthropology ranking, while the only African country represented, South Africa, features twice.
