Interested in studying an engineering or technology subject in Asia? Discover the top 10 universities in Asia with the strongest reputations in engineering and technology in 2013, based on QS’s global survey of academics - part of the QS University Rankings: Asia.
1. University of Tokyo – Japan
Leading the pack is Japan’s prestigious University of Tokyo, which has a very strong reputation across all subject fields. It’s also rated Asia’s best for arts & humanities, natural sciences and life sciences & medicine, and second for social sciences (behind the National University of Singapore).
2. National University of Singapore (NUS) – Singapore
As mentioned above, NUS actually gets its highest rating for social sciences. It’s also rated Asia’s second best for arts & humanities, second for life sciences & medicine, and fourth for natural sciences. In the overall QS University Rankings: Asia, NUS climbed to 2= this year, joint with the University of Hong Kong (HKU).
3. Tsinghua University – China
Ranked 14th in Asia in the overall ranking, Tsinghua claims a high reputation among academics as one of its main strengths. It gets its highest academic rating for engineering & technology subjects – but is within the top 10 for all other four subject areas.
4. Tokyo Institute of Technology – Japan
Tokyo Institute of Technology may be less internationally known than its fellow Tokyo-based institution, the University of Tokyo, but it still ranks 13th overall in this year’s QS University Rankings: Asia. Reflecting its subject focus, it has its strongest academic rating for engineering & technology, but is also rated 10th for natural sciences and within the region’s top 100 for social sciences.
5. Kyoto University – Japan
Ranking 10= in the overall QS University Rankings: Asia, Kyoto University is again very well rated across all the subject areas. It comes fourth in Asia in the overall academic reputation survey, and is rated 12th in the region by employers.
6. Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) – Korea
Another university specializing in science and technology subjects, it’s no surprise to see KAIST getting its highest rating from academics for engineering and technology. It comes 6th overall in this year’s QS University Rankings: Asia, climbing one place compared to 2012.
7. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) – Singapore
NTU has also climbed in the overall QS University Rankings: Asia – from 17th in 2012 to 10= in 2013. Again, it’s no surprise that engineering and technology is the field for which it’s best known – but it also gets strong scores for the other subject areas, rated Asia’s 10th best for social sciences & management, 16th for arts and humanities, 21st for natural sciences and 22nd for life sciences & medicine.

8. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) – Hong Kong
HKUST is the overall leader in the QS University Rankings: Asia, but only comes 10th overall in the academic reputation survey. This is its second strongest-rated subject area, after social sciences & management (where it’s rated 7th).
9. Shanghai Jiao Tong University – China
At 27th in the overall QS University Rankings: Asia, Shanghai Jiao Tong would be higher if the ranking was based solely on reputation. It’s rated Asia’s 15th best overall by academics, and 9th by employers. This is its strongest subject area, followed by life sciences & medicine.
10. Seoul National University (SNU) – Korea
SNU is fourth overall in the QS University Rankings: Asia, and comes 6th overall in the academic reputation survey. It’s rated 5th for social sciences, 6th for arts & humanities, 6th for life sciences & medicine, and 6th for natural sciences – so impressive as it’s 10th place here may be, engineering & technology is by no means SNU’s only strength!
