This course covers a wide range of topics in traditional and digital dentistry – from the fundamental science behind the materials dentists use to state-of-the-art computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques. Dentists, dental technicians and science graduates with clinical and engineering backgrounds can expand and update their skills by studying the latest advances in dental materials and digital dentistry.
You will examine the properties of different materials, why these features make them useful to dentists, and how this knowledge is applied to treatment options such as fixed restorations or removable prosthodontics and orthodontics. Alongside this, you will explore the scientific and practical issues that need to be considered when choosing, evaluating and developing dental materials.
Your digital dentistry training will take place in our new, state-of-the-art Dental Technology Unit and will include the use of intra-oral and extra-oral scanners to investigate dental problems in greater detail, as well as 3D printing and milling to manufacture dental appliances.
You will spend a large amount of time in practical sessions so that, by the end of the course, you will be able to produce advanced and technically demanding dental appliances and medical devices. Topics including tissue engineering, biomaterials and regenerative dentistry are also covered.
The largest part of your degree will be your research project. You will undertake a scientific research training programme and complete an independent research project, working closely with experts in the School of Clinical Dentistry.
