The University at Albany (UAlbany) is one of four University Centers in the State University of New York (SUNY) system. UAlbany has a rich history that dates back more than 180 years, starting as a teacher-training school and over time, with new curricula and four-year programs, transforming into the major public research university it is today. The university is featured among the top 100 universities in the U.S. by Times Higher Education and is recognized by U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) as one of the best global universities for academic research and reputation.

Nine Schools and Colleges

The College of Arts & Sciences, UAlbany’s largest academic unit, offers degree programs in the arts and humanities, communications, biological and physical sciences, mathematics, social sciences, and more. 

The College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security & Cybersecurity prepares students for careers in cybersecurity, information science, game design and emergency management.  

The College of Integrated Health Sciences educates students motivated to pursue social justice and health equity in public health, biomedical science and nursing fields. It’s also home to the School of Social Welfare, where students pursue degrees in social welfare and social work. 

The College of Nanotechnology, Science, & Engineering is the nation’s first college of nanotechnology, preparing students to work in engineering, nanotechnology and computer science. 

The Massry School of Business provides innovative and distinctive business degree programs in accounting, technology and information security, artificial intelligence and analytics. 

The Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy, home of the School of Criminal Justice, is one of the top public affairs and policy schools in the country and offers programs in criminal justice, political science and public administration and policy. 

The School of Education offers nationally ranked and accredited degree programs in education and mental health fields. 

UAlbany is also affiliated with Albany Medical School, where students in select healthcare programs can participate in classroom and lab components on UAlbany’s Uptown Campus and clinical rotations at Albany Med Health System facilities. This gives students access to cutting-edge facilities, hands-on fieldwork and expert faculty at a distinguished Level I trauma center.

Academic
UAlbany students have access to a range of modern academic facilities that support their learning and provide research opportunities and hands-on learning experiences:
  • Three libraries, including the main University Library and Science Library on the Uptown Campus, and the Dewey Graduate Library on the Downtown Campus
  • The Albany NanoTech Complex, one of the most advanced nanotechnology facilities of its kind in North America
  • ETEC, UAlbany’s newest state-of-the-art facility, features multiple collaborative research spaces and specialist labs, including the National Weather Service meteorological laboratory and a 1,700-square-foot drone lab
  • A $16.5M supercomputer, housed at the RNA Institute and powered by NVIDIA DGX systems, is currently the most capable AI supercomputer within the SUNY system 
  • New York State Mesonet, the nation’s largest and most advanced early-warning weather detection network
  • A new makerspace, equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, soldering irons and a variety of other tools and hardware, is available to all students to create, invent and learn. 

Housing

UAlbany Residence Halls are on campus near classes and dining options and provide a community where students can learn, study and socialize with other students. All undergraduate students are required to live on campus their freshman and sophomore years. 

Students can live in off-campus apartments or other private residences after their first two years. International students may also choose a homestay living option, which means living with a local family to improve their English and experience American home life and culture. 

Recreation

When it’s time to relax, get some exercise or take in a campus event, UAlbany students can find what they’re looking for in the university’s modern facilities. 

  • The recently renovated Broadview Center hosts basketball games and other student-life events.
  • At the Tom & Mary Casey Stadium students can cheer on the Great Danes football team. 
  • The Performing Arts Center and event spaces around campus host performances and other arts programing presented by student groups and campus organizations, such as The New York State Writer’s Institute.

UAlbany has limited scholarships available to both undergraduate and graduate international students.  The University at Albany Global Excellence Scholarships are awarded to incoming undergraduate international students based on academic achievement as well as other qualifications, as determined by the admissions committee. The maximum scholarship award is $20,500 per year for first-year (freshmen) applicants, for a potential total of $82,000 over four years. These scholarships are renewable, provided the student maintains a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and remains continuously enrolled as a full-time student at UAlbany paying out-of-state tuition. Scholarships are also available for select transfer students, with the maximum award being $9,500.
