The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) are both 100% research degrees that involve completing an original research project and a substantial thesis. The key difference is the length of the degree, with the MPhil being a two-year program compared to the 3-4 year PhD. The PhD is a higher-level qualification. The Master of Research (MRes) is a 1.5 year program that combines coursework focused on research skills development (0.5 years) with a one-year research project. Students who have undertaken sufficient research skills as part of their bachelor degree may be able to receive credit for the coursework component and complete the MRes in one year.
