Technische Universität Ilmenau

Technische Universität Ilmenau is a German research university founded originally in 1894. 5,800 undergraduates and 1,400 postgraduates are enrolled at the institution, which has a total of five academic faculties. Approximately 1,650 of the university’s students come from outside Germany.

Traditionally, the university has focused teaching on subjects in the fields of engineering, economics and natural sciences. Teaching is focused on ensuring students are well-supported through their studies, while the campus offers students modern and high-tech facilities. The Fraunhofer Institute of Digital Media Technology (IDMT) is particularly well known for its audio processing technology, media compression, and video processing teams.

In recent years, the university has produced highly competitive research in areas such as nano-engineering, digital media technology and technical and biomedical prosthetic systems. The university is also the most important employer in the town of Ilmenau where it’s based, and is actively contributing to the redevelopment of the local area.
