KUAS has five faculties: Economics and Business Administration, Health and Medical Science, Bioenvironmental Science, Humanities, and Engineering.
Japanese is the primary language for all faculties except for the Faculty of Engineering. KUAS offers a unique engineering program with a curriculum taught entirely in English. 35 percent of the professors in the KUAS Faculty of Engineering are from overseas.
To study at other faculties, international students will need Japanese ability equivalent to JLPT N2 level or above.
The engineering program at KUAS specializes in the fields of mechanical, electrical and mechatronics technology. It offers a high degree of flexibility in specialization so that students can have exposure to a wide range of knowledge and gain expertise in the various sub-disciplines necessary for professionally balanced engineers.
KUAS encourages students to gain hands-on experience in four projects (Flagstone, Cornerstone, Keystone and Capstone) to become street-smart global engineers. Students can start their own projects and compete in various competitions, or work with real companies to tackle industrial challenges. By cultivating creativity and flexible thinking, students will be able to play an immediately effective role in society after graduation. This practical training is the essence of KUAS engineering.
Entry requirements for the engineering undergraduate program:
• Students need to have completed a standard 12-year school education or the equivalent thereof
• KUAS is looking for students that have demonstrated an aptitude for math and physics
International students from non-English speaking countries also need to meet the minimum required score for one of the following English language ability tests: TOEFL iBT: 75 / IELTS 5.5 / PTE Academic: 50

The Kyoto University of Advanced Science Graduate School of Engineering seeks to face the rapid structural reforms in society and industry head-on. At KUAS, our faculty and staff seek to nurture engineers with the superior skills and knowledge so that they can become the next century's leaders in science and technology.
All graduate engineering students at KUAS belong to a research laboratory and learn in an "on-the-job" environment under globally active professors and industry professionals. This method, matched with cutting-edge facilities, is ideal for developing students into specialists in fields including power control systems, devices, motors, and more.
The KUAS engineering gradate programs aim to transcend conventional methods and transition to a comprehensive approach where students establish new systems and concepts based on multiple ideas from different academic disciplines. The program of the KUAS Graduate School of Engineering is based on the four fields of materials, energy, information and systems, with each research field correlating and overlapping with the others. Students can seek expert advice from specialists outside their own field, which can lead to new ideas. Students can learn how to innovate professionally while expanding their integrated knowledge beyond the boundaries of their major. At KUAS, it is our mission to nurture these comprehensive thinkers and enable them to create new technology platforms for decades to come.
There are three entry requirements for postgraduate students applying to the graduate school of engineering:
• Academic entry requirements: master’s program (16 years of education and graduating from a university); doctoral program (graduated from an undergraduate and master’s level program)
• English language requirements: meet the minimum required score – TOEFL iBT: 80 / IELTS 6.0 / PTE Academic: 50
• Prior supervisor consent

FAQs
Our Faculty of Engineering houses the Department of Mechanical and Electrical System Engineering, which primarily covers fields related to motors and actuators. The chairman of our university is also the CEO of a major Japanese electric motor company. Thus, we focus on the fields related to that industry.
In our Faculty of Engineering, students study 13 fields related to motors and actuators while also taking into account the production processes and products which utilize those technologies. Students thereby gain the skills required to become a specialist in motors and actuators. Students who wish to deepen their understanding of the fields related to mechatronics are encouraged to continue their studies in our Graduate School of Engineering.
In our graduate school, students can focus on four different fields: information, engineering systems, materials, and energy, which are also related to mechatronics.
Our program has three major advantages over other institutions.
Engineering Focused
- Compared to universities that have dozens of departments with different social and academic goals, KUAS is Engineering-centric, with Faculty of Engineering acting as our core program. Engineering is what we focus on as our "niche".
Career Focused
- KUAS provides engineering students with fundamental training and real experience needed to succeed through hands-on learning and our unique Capstone Program. When students near graduation, we call upon our expansive network of industry connections and team of career guidance counselors to ensure that students have every advantage possible when beginning their careers.
Learning Engineering in English; Study Japanese at the same time
- Engineering courses are provided in English. This means that Engineering students need not acquire Japanese proficiency before beginning their studies. Students are also provided with Japanese courses to expand their career opportunities.
While the number of scholarships offered to international students differs from year to year, all scholarships are provided to the applicants based on aptitude rather than factors such as nationality etc. The exact number of scholarships is not disclosed to students. More information regarding scholarships offered to KUAS students can be found here.
Not yet, although we will be offering English-language programs for our Faculty Economics and Business Administration, as well as our Faculty of Bioenvironmental Sciences in 2025. We will announce more details on this initiative via our social media and official website in the near future, so please look out for those updates.
