Jamia Hamdard

Jamia Hamdard is the result of the foresight, vision, a rare sense of planning and execution and personal sacrifice of the philosopher-philonthropist, and distinguished physician, Hakeem Abdul Hameed Sahib. It was conferred the status of “Deemed to be University” on the recommendations of the UGC under Section 3 of UGC act 1956 by Government of India in the year 1989. Since then it has steered ahead through all challenges and has gained an enviable position in the field of research and education. With its impressive track record in research, the university has a  distinction of  been consecutively accredited in ‘A’ grade by NAAC in three cycles and has also attained its place in Group I (Institutions Satisfying Most of Criteria for Deemed University Status)  through an assessment conducted by the Committee constituted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development for the purpose of Review of Existing Institutions Deemed to be University. The university is a conglomerate of  eight Faculties with distinct teaching and research programmes which are  spread out at all education levels. Jamia Hamdard  has a rare distinction of  being a seat of higher education in traditional system of Unani medicine, cutting edge Biological and Chemicals Science, Pharmacy, Nursing, Management and IT  and  has been recently fortified through establishment of Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences  and Research  (HIMSR)  for imparting medical education in modern system  as per the norms of Medical Council of India (India). Paramedical and allied health sciences courses are also offered at with HIMSR. Campus has over 4000 students on campus and over 2000 students are registered in courses offered under open and distance mode and at its off-campus. Another distinguished feature is the presence of on campus  active  research and academic  collaborations with institutions of international Sun Pharma, Vaccine Research Centre of Hilleman Labs Ltd., and BD-JH FACS Academy of Becton Dickinson Biosciences. The University  has substantially contributed in the area of quality research and has  set  high standards for Ph.D. theses and scientific deliberations. The recent addition of an off -campus in Kannur, Kerala  with approval of UGC and MHRD is focused at serving the educationally marginalized communities. In the national ranking conducted by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Jamia Hamdard has ranked 3rd and 1st in Pharmacy in 2016 and 2017, respectively. In the University Category it ranked 26th among 724 participating institutions of higher learning. It is also one of the few select universities supported by the Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (PURSE) programme of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India which is awarded to select top performing universities in recognition of their R&D contribution measured by publications and citations.
