The Criminal Justice Department will prepare you for the challenges of our multifaceted criminal justice system, helping you develop the knowledge, skills and strength of character required to change lives -and move the world. Our rigorous, high-caliber courses are taught by outstanding faculty members who are actively engaged in criminal justice research. They will become your biggest advocates, helping you to make invaluable connections in the field. In addition to advancing criminal justice scholarship, your teachers will provide one-on-one advising and mentoring; they?ll help with your professional development; and they?ll expose you to current research and evidence-based practices. They?ll even help with applications to graduate or law schools! Student Outcomes Differentiate the criminal justice system components from both a theoretical and practical perspective, and critically evaluate existing practices and procedures in search of more viable alternatives. Identify the nature and causes of crime, recognizing how strong families, stable communities, effective schools, and reductions in violence and poverty prevent crime. Appreciate the myriad social, political, legal, and ethical concerns embedded in complex criminal justice issues. Demonstrate a complete understanding of substantive and procedural criminal law, and enumerate the importance of fair and equal legal treatment to American criminal justice. Present themselves as professionals whose integrity is beyond reproach and who are committed to treating both victims and offenders with respect and dignity. Careers that change lives We are proud of our excellent track record in helping students successfully move their careers forward, whether the next step is graduate school or the workplace. Our students have been handpicked to work in federal agencies; they have served as police commissioners and high-ranking federal agents; and over 450 NYPD officers are Iona alumni.
