In Turkey, admission to undergraduate and associate degree programs is carried out through placement based on scores obtained from a centralized national examination. In contrast, admission to master’s and doctoral programs is regulated by institutional criteria set by each university senate and involves a combination of standardized test requirements and program-specific evaluations.
For admission to master’s programs, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and meet the minimum ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) score determined by the university senate, which cannot be lower than 55 in the relevant score type. For non-thesis master’s programs, the ALES requirement may be waived, or, if required, the minimum score is set by the senate. Senate decisions also define the weighting of the ALES score—no less than 50%—and other principles governing applications from graduating students. Universities may admit students solely based on their ALES score or may additionally consider undergraduate GPA, written scientific assessments, and/or interviews. Students who have completed a ten-semester undergraduate program (excluding preparatory classes) are regarded as holding a master’s degree.
Admission to doctoral programs requires a thesis-based master's degree and an ALES score at or above the threshold set by the senate (not less than 55). Applicants entering integrated doctoral programs directly after a bachelor’s degree must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00/4.00 (or equivalent) and at least 80 points on the ALES in the relevant score type, alongside other conditions defined by the senate. A foreign language proficiency score—at least 55 on YÖK-recognized central or equivalent international language exams—is mandatory for all doctoral applicants, with higher thresholds possible depending on program requirements. All application and admission conditions for graduate programs, as well as the validity periods of documents for which YÖK does not specify a duration, are determined by the university senate.
