The European University Institute (EUI), located in Florence, Italy, is Europe’s postgraduate and postdoctoral research university dedicated to the social sciences and humanities. Established in 1972 by the European Union’s founding member states, the EUI opened its doors to researchers in 1976. Today, it brings together a diverse international community of scholars, researchers, policy professionals and students from more than 100 countries.
The EUI specialises in the social sciences and humanities, with four academic departments: Economics, History, Law, and Political and Social Sciences. Its academic community also includes the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and the Florence School of Transnational Governance, which focus on interdisciplinary research and policy-related issues.
The EUI offers PhD and master's programmes, postdoctoral fellowships and executive education. Its four-year doctoral programmes provide advanced research training in the four academic departments, while master's programmes focus on economic research and transnational governance. The EUI also hosts postdoctoral researchers and offers professional training for policymakers and other practitioners.
