Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Agra

Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University (DBRAU), Agra, formerly known as Agra University, is one of the oldest and most prestigious public universities in North India. Established on 1 July 1927. 

The University was founded with the efforts of distinguished visionaries such as Rev. Canon A. W. Davis, Munshi Narain Prasad Asthana, Dr. L. P. Mathur, Lala Dewan Chand, Rai Bahadur Anand Swaroop, and Dr. Brajendra Swaroop. The first Chancellor was His Excellency Sir William Sinclair Marris, and the first Vice-Chancellor was Reverend Canon A. W. Davis (1927–1929). In 1995, the University was renamed Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University in honour of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, a distinguished scholar, social reformer, and principal architect of the Indian Constitution. Its motto, “Tamso Maa Jyotirgamaya” (Lead me from darkness to light), reflects DBRAU’s commitment to knowledge, enlightenment, and societal progress.

The University has over 546 self-financed colleges, 28 aided colleges, 12 government colleges, and 1 constituent colleges, in addition to numerous institutes located on its main campuses.

The Residential Wing of the University comprises four major campuses:

Academically, DBRAU offers programs across 16 major faculties — spanning Science, Arts, Commerce, Life Sciences, Management, Engineering, Education, Agriculture, Medicine, Law, Homeopathy, Ayurveda, Unani, Home Science, Fine Arts, and Mental Health. On its main campuses, eight faculties deliver undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, certificate, and doctoral programs to thousands of students.

Recognition and Rankings

DBRAU is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and holds an A+ grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, the university placed in the 51–100 band among state public universities, underscoring its standing on the national stage.

Research and Academic Chairs

Research is woven deeply into DBRAU's identity. The university has established four major Shodh Peeths (Research Chairs):

·         Ambedkar Peeth

This research infrastructure is backed by funding from major agencies such as CSIR, UGC, DST, the World Bank (through RUSA), TEQIP-III, and the Uttar Pradesh State Government.

Infrastructure and Digital Learning

Classrooms and laboratories are well-equipped, and the central library automated through SOUL 2.0 and integrated with INFLIBNET gives students and faculty access to an extensive range of physical and digital resources. 

One distinctive feature is DBRAU's own Community Radio Channel, 90.4 – Agra Ki Aawaz.

Entrepreneurship and Employability

DBRAU actively nurtures entrepreneurship through the Vivekanand Incubation Centre, which has supported several registered startups. To further boost employability, the university runs Skill Development Centres, Language Labs, and Vocational Schools, complemented by the Centre for Transdisciplinary Studies. The university was also recently honoured at Rashtrapati Bhavan for excellence in the NSS category, recognized for best coordinator and best title.

DBRAU maintains an outward-looking academic culture through national and international collaborations, MoUs, interdisciplinary research initiatives, and active participation in conferences. Foreign language courses in German, French, and Russian further support students' global engagement and career readiness.

AI, Skilling, Research and Industry Highlights

·         “AI for Everyone” introduced as a mandatory vocational course for undergraduate programmes; 1.06 lakh+ UG students enrolled across 570+ affiliated colleges.

·         Seven new courses introduced at IET, including B.E. in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning and B.E. Footwear Engineering.

·         Existing syllabi revised to integrate current AI/ML topics and modules.

·         Hindi-medium online Cyber Security vocational course planned for 2 lakh+ students from session 2027–28 in association with IIT Kanpur’s C3iHub and Vivekanand Incubation Foundation.

·         18+ workshops and conclaves conducted, with 3,900+ students, faculty members and research scholars directly upskilled in modern AI workflows.

·         15 AI startups incubated under Vivekanand Incubation Foundation, spanning areas such as AgriTech, Cyber Defence and EdTech.

·         ₹33.79 crore ISSA Scheme outlay for NSQF Level 5 apprenticeships for 5,000 students across 10 industrial sectors.

·         Industry and global collaborations include IBM, TCS, Samsung and an Indo-French Quantum-AI project proposal.

·         Samsung Innovation Campus Phase-4 launched on 7 August 2026, reaching 600+ students across MCA, M.Sc. (CS), PGDCA, B.E. and BCA programmes.

·         Mega Campus Placement Drive 2026 resulted in 29 high-tech selections.

·  The University facilitates scholarships and financial assistance, including full tuition fee waivers for eligible students from SC, ST, OBC, minority, economically weaker and other eligible categories, in accordance with applicable government norms and institutional provisions
