City’s undergraduate degrees and facilities have been developed with employers and leading figures in industry and embed employability within the curriculum. City was recently ranked 6th  in London for graduate prospects (Complete University Guide 2022). Most degrees at City are accredited by professional bodies and nearly all courses offer placements.

City’s academic staff are engaged in world-transforming research. Whether developing biomedical sensors to improve survival rates of patients in intensive care or leading unique research into social attitudes across Europe, students at City are educated by academic staff who are at the forefront of their fields.

City, University of London offers a wide range of taught and research postgraduate degrees, with every member of City’s postgraduate community benefiting from outstanding academic staff, comprehensive student support and tailored careers guidance.

Courses cover the following academic areas: Business, Arts, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Health Sciences and Law. Each of City’s academic Schools has a particular strength, for example the School of Health and Psychological Sciences is leading research in ophthalmology.

City is divided into six different academic Schools:


A postgraduate degree, whether taught or research provides students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of their chosen subject and explore particular areas of interest, while developing valuable transferable skills, including analytical thinking and research and presentation techniques.

One of City’s greatest strengths is their links to business and industry and expanding these links is central to their future strategy. City offers skills-focused degrees that embed employability within the curriculum and was recently ranked 6th in London for graduate prospects (Complete University Guide 2022). Alongside employability, City are focused on setting up new interdisciplinary research centres that will produce solutions to some of the biggest challenges that society faces. In the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, published in May 2022 found: 

  • 86% of City research rated as world leading 4* (40%) and internationally excellent 3* (46%) quality (based on City's submission to the REF).
  • City is 39th in the UK out of 129 universities according to the Times Higher Education rankings, an increase of 12 places since REF 2014.

In keeping with City’s close links with business and the professions, many of City’s postgraduate degrees are offered on a part-time and flexible basis, allowing students to manage their study around employment commitments. City offers over 150 taught postgraduate degrees, each developed by academic staff who are experts in their fields and who possess an in-depth understanding of the graduate employment marketplace.

City’s outstanding subject specific facilities are the result of close relationships with industry. They have been designed, often in collaboration with professionals working in relevant sectors, to ensure students develop professional skills and prepare for their future careers. 

City has invested £120 million in structural developments in campus since 2012. This includes the development of a state of the arts sport centre, a new student bar and numerous learning spaces. 

City’s main campus houses the University library, which occupies five floors in the Northampton Square building. In addition, there are specialist libraries for Bayes Business School (formerly Cass) and The City Law School.

CitySport, the new sports centre, is the largest student sports facility in central London. Fitted with the latest and most sophisticated fitness equipment across 3,000m2 of floor space, CitySport provides leading-edge sport and well-being facilities for students.

City is a member of the University of London (UOL). As a result, City students have access to a large student community, numerous student societies, additional sports facilities, accommodation provision and libraries.

Student life

City is located at the heart of one of the most vibrant cities in the world. The English capital is a truly global city, boasting a wealth of jobs across a range of industries and some of the world’s top cultural attractions.

City’s main Northampton Square campus sits between three of London’s most popular districts. Islington offers exciting social and shopping options, Shoreditch buzzes with entrepreneurial creativity and lively nightlife, while Clerkenwell is a hub for trend-setting design and cosy bars.


City is among the first universities to ensure that the foundations for students’ future careers are laid before they graduate.

All City undergraduates complete a Career Activation Project (CAP) as part of their degree. This could take the form of a MicroPlacement, an industry-led consultancy project, a summer internship, volunteering or mentoring and coaching. Each project has been designed to provide essential relevant professional experience.

Undergraduate students also take a Career Activation Module (CAM) to help prepare for the application process when seeking graduate employment. Each CAM has been designed to be unique to each subject and career options and form a core part of the study programme.
