BSU is the oldest and largest university in Azerbaijan, renowned as the premier educational institution in the country. It has been the academic home to many of Azerbaijan's most influential figures. BSU continues to grow as a leading university in the region, fostering innovative ideas in education, enhancing capabilities for future generations, striving for excellence in science and research, promoting intercultural dialogue for knowledge exchange, and setting new educational standards in Azerbaijan. The university collaborates with over 120 partner universities worldwide and welcomes students from more than 40 countries.

BSU actively participates in international exchange programs such as Erasmus+ KA 107 and Mevlana, facilitating the exchange of students and staff. The university offers over 12 double degree programs with institutions from the USA, Germany, France, Israel, Switzerland, and Kazakhstan. Notably, the UNESCO Chair on Human Rights and Information Law was established at BSU in 2015, followed by the ICESCO Chair on Biomedical Materials.

BSU also hosts five international centers or institutes, as the Confucius Institute, Korean Information Technology Centre, and Kazakh Centre.

The university boasts two research institutes, alongside the Excellence Centre. Additionally, BSU has two education internship and recreational centers and a branch in the regions. The Lyceum and the College also fall under BSU's supervision.

In June 2023, BSU received institutional accreditation for five years from the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education accredited six of BSU's graduate programs in various chemistry disciplines, with these international program accreditations being officially recognized for state accreditation.

In the QS Western Asia Rankings 2025 , BSU improved its standing from 15th to 13th place , further consolidating its position among leading universities in the region. Moreover, BSU entered the QS Subject Rankings for the first time, achieving its highest subject-specific results to date :

  • Oil and Gas Engineering: 151–175 band

  • Mathematics: 501–600 band

These achievements reflect BSU’s growing academic reputation, research capacity, and international competitiveness. 

BSU represents Azerbaijan in the THE WUR and is ranked in the THE Subject Rankings for Physical Sciences and Engineering & Technology . In the THE Impact Rankings 2025 , BSU achieved a significant advancement, moving up by approximately 700 positions and placing in the 401–600 band . Furthermore, BSU is participating in the THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2025 , where it is positioned in the 401–500 range , reflecting its growing strength in cross-disciplinary research and innovation.

BSU made a remarkable leap in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings — debuting at 607th place in 2024 and improving to 493rd place (1st rank in Azerbaijan) , a clear testament to its deepening commitment to environmental sustainability and green campus initiatives.

BSU entered the global Top 1000 in the RUR 2025 , securing 825th place worldwide (country rank 1st) , marking an important milestone in its international ranking trajectory.

BSU was awarded an overall 5-Star rating (Excellent) following the QS Stars Audit Assessment , reflecting its strong performance across key areas such as teaching, employability, academic development, internationalization, and facilities.

Cover letter, addressed to the head of institution indicating chosen specialty, language of instruction and form of education (application can be submitted in electronic form); 2. A copy (copies) of and legalized with apostille the education document (documents), which includes the list of subjects passed and the grades received from those subjects, and its notarized copy of translation into Azerbaijani. 3. Health certificate as well as the medical reference about not being infected by any of contagious diseases (Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, Hepatitis B and C viruses) 4. Valid border crossing document 5. Photos (taken in the last 6 months) 6. A scanned copy of the valid passport (photo page) with expiration date more than 1 year 6 month of application submission date to the University 7. Certificate of passing the examination in language of instruction (if available); 8. Copies of honorary awards, certificates, diplomas and other such documents (if available) Note: 1. Foreign citizens having a permanent residence permit issued by the Migration Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan can be admitted to Baku State University only based on test exams conducted by the State Examination Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan. 2. The citizenship of the Republic of Azerbaijan, along with the citizenship of a foreign country, cannot submit a document to Baku State University as a foreign citizen. They can be admitted to the university based on test exams conducted by the State Examination Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan. 3. Foreign students within 90 (ninety) days from the date of the formalization of admission to education institutions of the Azerbaijan Republic, submits a copy of the document confirming his/her residence in the territory of the Azerbaijan Republic to the education institution
