Over the years, the Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna, the oldest university in the Western world, has paved the way for innovation thanks to an increasingly rich programme catalogue, cutting-edge research, a convincing third mission strategy and a growing international perspective.

Since its foundation in 1088, the University of Bologna has been student-centred, and, thanks to its five campuses (in Bologna, Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna and Rimini) and its Buenos Aires branch, it offers its student a varied course catalogue that is tailored to the needs of present-day society: over 260 degree programmes within its 31 departments.  

Its community of almost 100,000 students makes the University of Bologna one of Italy’s largest universities, ranking first in Italy in terms of number of its students in exchange programmes abroad and within the top 5 universities in Europe in terms of number of exchange students.  Moreover, the University of Bologna is among the top 5 Italian universities in major international rankings (QS, Shanghai, Times Higher Education, GreenMetric).

Available programs

The Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna offers 118 first cycle degree programmes/Bachelor  (3-year full time length courses; the academic qualification is obtained after having completed 180 ECTS credits) and 14 single cycle degree programmes  (5 or 6-year full time length courses; the academic qualification is obtained after having completed 300 or 360 ECTS credits). The Programme catalogue covers all subject and all sectors.

The University of Bologna offers 144 second cycle degree programmes/Master  (2-year full time length courses; the academic qualification is obtained after having completed 120 ECTS credits). Among those,   88 are  international Degree Programmes,   77  of which are taught in English.

Graduate employment (2019)

Graduates from the University of Bologna have an advantage when it comes to entering into the world of work, whether in Italy or abroad. Each year more than 18, 000 students graduate from the University of Bologna. The statistics collected by AlmaLaurea tell us that more than 45% of total graduates (first-cycle graduates who do not continue their studies, second-cycle and combined-cycle graduates) obtain regular gainful employment within a year of graduation. This percentage rises to 71% after three years and 78% after five years. The same surveys report that 74, 2% of our graduates would choose the same course at the University of Bologna again.

International Talents @Unibo: Scholarships for 2025/26

30 scholarships for international students enrolling in Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Single Cycle degree programmes. Each grant includes €6,500 and full tuition fee exemption, awarded for two academic years based on GRE scores and financial status. Payments are merit-based.

The University of Bologna is offering 30 new scholarships for deserving international students enrolling in second-cycle degree programmes for the academic year 2025/26. The scholarships are worth €6,500 gross and cover full tuition fees. The awards are based on GRE test scores and financial need, with payment dependent on merit. To be eligible, applicants must meet specific academic and financial requirements, including a GRE score and financial status.
