Part of the Deep South region, Texas is the second-largest state in the USA in terms of both population and area.
If you’ve never been to Texas before, you might only know the state for its rodeos, country music, barbeques and cowboys - but there’s a lot more to Texas than this.
The state is home to some of the world’s best student cities, including Houston, Arlington, Austin and Dallas and contains some of the US’ most prestigious universities, such as the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA).
So, why is Texas so popular among students? Here are four reasons you should consider Texas as your study destination.
Texas contains some of the best universities in the USA
If you’re considering studying in Texas, you’ll find plenty of choice for top universities. Texas is home to some of the most prestigious universities in the US, including 18 that feature in the most recent QS World University Rankings: USA.
The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) is one of two universities in Arlington to feature in the rankings. It is also one of four Texas universities to receive the coveted Texas Tier One designation, which opens the door for additional research funding.
UTA is also a prestigious R1 Carnegie classification – a title renowned for its academic and research excellence.
UTA is home to state-of-the-art facilities that encourage students to be critical thinkers. Through academic, internship, and research programmes, students benefit from real-world experiential learning opportunities that help them contribute to the community and stand out to graduate employers.
A hub of economic activity, Texas attracts top graduate employers
Since the pandemic started, Texas’ economic development and tourism office has said there’s been a “tremendous increase” in companies developing their presence in Texas, with around 237 relocation or expansion projects currently underway.
The state is an attractive base for many of the world’s biggest employers, with 30 million residents providing a sizeable workforce and employers can also benefit from Texas’ abundant natural resources and land.
For example, Tesla is currently building a Gigafactory in Texas. This factory is planned to be the main factory for the Tesla Cybertruck and the Tesla Semi and is also the site of Tesla’s corporate headquarters.
Apple is also building is second-largest campus in Austin, Texas. Similarly, Oracle made the decision to move its headquarters to Austin in late 2020.
What does this mean for students? There are plenty of employment and work experience opportunities at both student level and graduate level. In fact, 65 percent of UTA’s 250,000 alumni continue to live and work in North Texas after graduation.
UTA graduates also have the highest first-year wages and hold leadership positions at 22 of North Texas Fortune 500 companies.
There’s always plenty to see and do in Texas
If you’re looking for a study destination with vibrant and friendly cities, as well as vast open countryside, Texas may be the study destination for you.
Because of the state’s vast size – it’s bigger than the UK, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands combined – you can expect a vastly different student experience depending on where specifically in Texas you decide to study.
For example, if you choose to study in Arlington – home to the University of Texas at Arlington – you will be studying in a city full of activity.
For sports fans, Arlington hosts the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field and the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. Arts and culture seekers will enjoy the Arlington Museum of Art and music venues such as Arlington Music Hall and Symphony Arlington. Arlington is also home to the largest dedicated Esports facility in North America, where Esports teams from around the world compete for top recognition.
If you love to travel, the University of Texas at Arlington's central location, between Dallas (to the east) and Fort Worth (to the west), means it’s near two major airports: DFW International Airport and Love Field.

One of the most affordable states in the US
Despite all of the amazing benefits, studying in Texas is also relatively affordable compared to other US locations, with a low cost of living and affordable housing.
According to Numbeo, the cost of rent in Arlington is 68 percent lower than in New York and consumer prices are 52 percent lower.
With annual tuition at University of Texas at Arlington averaging around $28,500 (approx. £20,930), there are a number of scholarships available at UTA. The school offers more than $30 million (≈£22 million) in scholarships each year for students to reward academic excellence.
