As a Colombian, I absolutely love studying in Latin America. The rich history, vibrant culture and warm people always remind me why it’s an exciting place to pursue my education. It’s a region full of opportunities that have broadened my perspective and enriched my life in countless ways.
As a student of political science and a master’s in history at the National University of Colombia in Medellín, I am thrilled to share with you why Latin America is the perfect destination for your studies.
High-quality universities
Latin America is home to many world-renowned universities and academic institutions, including the region’s top ranked universities, Universidade de São Paolo, Universidad Nacional Autonóma de México (UNAM) and Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA). In fact, there are 192 Latin American universities ranked in the latest QS World University Rankings.
While studying in Latin America, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from world-leading professors and experts in a wide range of fields, not only my area, but beyond my field with free-choice subjects, which you can take regardless of what you are studying.
Our universities provide excellent academic programmes that give students hands-on experience, real-world connections, and a deep understanding of the social, economic, and political issues affecting Latin America and the wider world.
A focus on social justice
Latin America as a region offers diverse perspectives and approaches to teaching and research. One of them is prioritising social justice and community engagement in their academic programmes.
Latin American universities often have strong ties to local communities and strive to address societal issues through their research and outreach initiatives. In my political science and history programme at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, I’ve been able to work on a project to find a way to improve the lives of people in Medellín’s low-income communities. In addition to social justice in curriculum, I've also gained practical experience through internships and community service projects.
A rich cultural and historical heritage
As a student who hails from Latin America, in addition to the academic benefits, I am able to connect with my roots and culture by studying here. I’m also able to gain a unique perspective on the world and develop a deep understanding of the diverse peoples and nations that make up this vibrant region.
Latin America has an enormous richness in history and cultural heritage. From the ancient civilisations of the Aztecs and Incas to the colonial legacy of the Spanish and Portuguese empires, Latin America is steeped in a complex and fascinating history that offers endless opportunities for exploration and learning. Latin America's history is full of contradictions and paradoxes that challenge our assumptions and broaden our perspectives.
For example, the region that gave birth to liberation movements and anti-colonial struggles also experienced authoritarian regimes and social inequalities that persist today. Most importantly, Latin America's history is not only a matter of the past, but also a dynamic and ongoing process that shapes the region's present and future.
A culinary journey through Latin American flavours
Latin America is home to a wide range of cuisines, each with their own unique flavours and ingredients. It’s a delicious and diverse cuisine, from spicy Mexican food to fresh Peruvian seafood. Students can experience a variety of delicious dishes.
One curious fact about Latin America food that I can share as a Colombian, is that in Mexico they are more into spicy food like Tajin, while Argentinians love meat, but also very sweet candies like alfajores, and Colombians like to put lemon on everything in front of us.
Additionally, food in Latin America is very affordable, making it easier for students to enjoy local cuisine without breaking the bank, particularly as there’s a vibrant street food culture, with food vendors offering a variety of delicious and affordable options.
A world of extremes, including weather
Although we’re all dealing with climate change, Latin American countries enjoy warm and sunny weather year-round, providing opportunities for outdoor activities and a healthy dose of vitamin D. Temperatures rarely drop below freezing, making it easier to adjust to the weather.
I live in Medellín, where I get to experience a little bit of both sides, summer and winter. Some days are so hot that I have to use sunscreen and other days are so heavy with rain that we say Están cayendo maridos (It’s raining men).
Latin America offers a wide variety of climates for everyone, from tropical in the Caribbean to temperate in the Andes, providing us, the students, a range of options to choose from.
For me, I have learned to appreciate the unique aspects of living in a tropical climate. I don't let extreme heat or freezing get in the way of my hobbies, so I'm often prepared with an umbrella and sunscreen, ready to explore my city.
Testimonials
Bilingual education in a globalised world
Here, many universities offer programmes in Spanish, English and sometimes Portuguese, recognising the importance of bilingualism in a globalised world.
As students, we get to experience international collaborations with other universities and businesses. Many universities in Latin America have partnerships with institutions around the world, providing opportunities for students and faculty to collaborate with colleagues from different countries and cultures.
Learning English and becoming bilingual has opened up countless opportunities for me to grow.
Beautiful landscapes and outdoor spaces
I might be a little bit biased, but Latin America is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, diverse and stunning places that captivate visitors and residents.
If you move to Latin America, you can explore lush rainforest, towering mountains and crystal-clear waters, marvel at unique rock formations and geysers, and discover diverse wildlife.
A complete experience
I feel very privileged to be able to study in Latin America and to contribute to the cultural exchange that is taking place here. Studying in this region has given me a deeper understanding of how I want to live my life. I have a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities that face Latin America, and I am passionate about working to create positive change in my community and beyond here in Colombia.
From its rich history and diverse cultures to its world-class universities and unique perspectives on the world, studying in Latin America will give you a unique and invaluable education that you will carry for the rest of your life.
Don’t miss out.
