The recently released QS World University Rankings by Subject features nearly 700 of the top higher education institutes to study medicine. 

The QS University Rankings by Subject are based on five indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, the H-index (a way of measuring the productivity and published work of a scientist or scholar) and international research network. You can find more details about the methodology behind the subject rankings here.

Top universities for medicine in the US and Canada

Over 100 of the world’s best medical schools are found in the United States, including several of the worldwide top ten. Harvard University has a fantastic reputation with both academics and employers while also scoring highly for its research output and international research network. Also, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a global medical research leader, particularly when looking at the citations per paper indicator. 

Canada's top medical schools include University of TorontoMcGill UniversityUniversity of British Columbia and McMaster University

Top universities for medicine in Europe

Europe is home to over 250 of the top universities to study medicine. Of these, the United Kingdom claims nearly one-fifth of Europe’s top medical schools. As well as the top-ranked medical schools mentioned in the table above, top medical schools in the UK include King’s College London, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, The University of Edinburgh, The University of Manchester and University of Glasgow

France performs well this year with both Sorbonne University and Université Paris-Saclay scoring well in the research citations per paper indicator.  

Of Germany's 30-plus medical schools in this year's ranking, two are particularly notable: Universität Heidelberg and Ludwig-Maximillians-Universität München

Likewise, the two most significant universities for studying medicine in The Netherlands are the University of Amsterdam and Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Denmark is well-represented in this year's rankings and University of Copenhagen scored well in the citations per paper indicator. 

Sweden’s entries in this year’s rankings include Karolinska Institutet, which has scored particularly well for academic reputation.

Top universities for medicine in Australia and New Zealand

In Australia, there are over 20 top medical schools. The University of MelbourneThe University of Sydney and Monash University have all performed well.

New Zealand's representation in the top medical schools ranking is led by the University of Auckland.

Top universities for medicine in Asia

This year’s medicine subject ranking includes nearly 200 of the best medical schools in Asia. Japan contains the most medicine schools in Asia including two top performers – The University of Tokyo and Kyoto University

Mainland China also performed well with its top universities including: Peking UniversityFudan University, Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University

South KoreaIndiaMalaysia and Taiwan are all well-represented this year, while the leading medical schools in Hong Kong SAR include The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The University of Hong Kong.

Top universities for medicine in the Middle East

The Middle East is home to nearly 50 of the world’s best medical schools. Saudi Arabia contains the highest number of medical schools, closely followed by Israel. Of these King Adulaziz University and Tel Aviv University are among the most notable.

Elsewhere, students considering studying in Lebanon may want to consider the American University of Beirut, while Jordan, Iraq, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait are also represented.

Top universities for medicine in Latin America  

There are nearly 60 medical universities in Latin America featured in the QS University Rankings by Subject this year. Brazil claims the highest proportion of these, including Universidade de São Paulo.

Chile's top universities for medicine include Pontificia Universidad Católica de ChileUniversidad de Valparaíso and Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaíso

The most significant university from Columbia in this year's rankings is Universidad Nacional de Columbia, while Universidad de Buenos Aires is one of several universities from Argentina to be included.

Mexico's top universities for medicine include Universidad Nacional Autonóma de Mexico.

Top universities for medicine in Africa

Africa also performed well in the rankings this year with over 20 university entries. South Africa is home to several of these, including the University of Cape Town.

Another study destination to be well-represented is Egypt. One of the top universities in this country is Cairo University.
